  • ID: I194
  • Name: Byard WRIGHT
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: ABT 1800 in DE or MD

  • Death: 1860/1865 in Illinois
  • Burial: Cherry Point Cemetery, Evans Twp., Marshall Co., IL
  • Occupation: Pioneer, Farmer
  • Note:

An old stone marker rests in a corner of Cherry Point Cemetery, Marshall County, Illinois looking almost discarded. It bears no inscription other than the name Byard Wright. This is the tombstone of our earliest known Wright ancestor.

Byard was born about 1800 in either Delaware or Maryland according to conflicting U.S. census records. He married Nancy Dallis on February 10, 1825, in Pickaway County, OH. Parents unknown.

Byard and Nancy owned a farm in Union Township, Ross Co., where he was enumerated in the 1830 census. Most likely their first five children were born here. As of November 2016, only 3 of the 5 - Walter, Byard W., and Sally have been identified. About 1836 the Wrights moved to Clinton Co., OH, where five more children were born. Then during the fall of 1847, they trailed west to Marshall County, Illinois. In 1848 their youngest child, Susan, was born in Marshall Co.

Byard and Nancy lived in Illinois the rest of their days. As their children married several moved to neighboring counties: George, Andrew and Susan resided in Livingston; Lloyd resided in LaSalle; and William Harrison lived in Woodford. Elizabeth left Illinois with her family for Fonda, Iowa. Byard W. and Sally, who married Alexander Brown, remained in Marshall County.

Byard senior died sometime before 1865 because he wasn?t listed in the 1865 Illinois state census nor the 1870 U.S. Census. After Byard?s death, Nancy lived with Lloyd?s family in LaSalle County. She is buried in the Dana Cemetery, LaSalle Co. Her tombstone reads,"Nancy Dallis Wright, Mother of G.W. Wright, Born 1805, Died June 13, 1887". George must have paid for the tombstone because only he is named on the stone.
