[A line is drawn through, 'July,' and, 'June,' is written above it.] Proved by oath of William Leeds and Dennis Mac Carty, 'Two of the Witnesses,' that at the same time the other subscribing wit. was present; before Lawrence Smyth, Surrogate, Mon. Co., Aug. 18, 1729. Gives: 'to Ann My Dearly Beloved Wife all my Lands and Moveables During the time shee remaines my Widdow '... if shee can pay my Debts and if shee cant pay them otherewife then By Selling part of my Estate my will is that 'shee may sell as much as will pay the Debts or my lawfull contracts ....'; 'that my Estate may be Devided 'Equally Between my Seven Children Gilbert Lane Garratt Lane Aaron Lane Mathias Lane Cornelius Lane Ralph Lane 'and Nelly Lane share .... alike only .... that Gilbert Lane may have 10 1s. more then anny of the 'others ....'; 'that my Beloved wife Ann Lane Cornelios Lane and Court Scank to be my Executors.' Wits.: mats LANE Rebecca Leeds [her mark] William Leeds Dennis Mc Carty Oath of Executors, Anna Lane, Cornelius Lane and Koert Schanck; before Lawr: Smyth, 'on the Day above Written.' [Aug. 18, 1729.] ['Recorded [in] Libr B., ffo: 215.'] [Endorsed on back: 'Mathias Lane Will recd. from mr Law. Smith, May 28th, 1731 ....'] His father deeded 460 acres to Matthias in Middletown Twp., MonmouthCo., NJ 15 May 1715. He probably removed with his father from LongIsland about 1709, or slightly earlier, to near Middletown, NJ Hejoined the Marlborough Dutch Church in 1713, on which records the namewas written 'Laen', but sometimes 'Laan.' Dutch ministers evidentlyknew the name had been 'Laenen.' The recorded 'ear marks' for hiscattle, in 1713 is given in Stillwell's 'Hist, and Gen. Miscellany'Vol II, page 205. This Matthias was the father of Matthias, Corneliusand Garret who went to Somerset Co., and established what are known asthe Bedminster lines; Also of Arie, of near White House. In a paper of 1729 executed before his death, he signed his name'Mateyes Lane,' but his will was signed 'Matt Lane'. Matthias diedwhen only forty-six years of age, two years later then his father. Hiswill, dated 27 Jul 1729 was probated 18 Aug 1729. In this will hementions his wife Ann, and these children: 'Gilbert, Garratt, Arron,Mathies, Cornelius, Ralph, Nelly.' His executors were his wife, Ann,his brother Cornelius and Court Scant (Schenck). By this willMatthias gave everything 'real & movable' to his wife, Ann, during herwidowhood, and afterward the property was to be equally dividedbetween his seven children. The inventory of his personal estate,dated 8 Aug 1729, amounted to 329.9.10 pounds including two Negroslaves, one (male) valued at 70 pounds, and one (female) at 40 pounds.His widow signed this inventory 'Ann Laen'. After his death, hiswidow married John Gordon, and was living as Gordon's wife in 1735 asper papers connected with the settlement of Matthis' estate. Erb and Myers Family Tree <>
