      Text: : He [Alan] joined the Royal Navy as a cadet in the mid th irties and was posted to the China station. During the wa r he served just about everywhere and ended up in the Pacif ic serving in "Black Prince" which at the end of hostilitie s was I think transferred to the Australian Navy. After lea ving the Navy he joined a shipping line as a purser (Not b ursar!) travelling to New Zealand. Although we were good fr iends we did not often meet. I was in the Army from 1939 an d after the war was working overseas. Alan sadly died in Se pt 1975, just short of his 58th birthday.
