Withi n a year of his arrival in 1909, the Java Chaplaincy Fund r e-established Java as a live part of the Diocese of Singapo re.
    p. 613 Nicholson left as manager of Singapore in 1906.

    p. 156 (J.C. Nicholson) After retiring as Manager Singapore , he was appointed Sub-Manager, London in 1907. The Addise s watched his health deteriorate from asthma - "Nicholson u p from Bexhill to lunch with me. He is better but quite rec onciled now that we have put [C.W.] May in his place to g o off again to Switzerland for a time. Poor chap! I fear h e is fighting against fate.The climate of London is too muc h for him. That same year he faced his fate and returned t o the East as Manager Batavia, replacing the veteran M.C. K irkpatrick. Nicholson remained there throughout the Great W ar; when he retired after 41 years in the East the Board gr anted him a gratuity of 20,000, a relatively generous su m even in 1921.
