    FALLEN OFFICERS
    COLONEL MARKER, D.S.O.
    LIEUTENANT-COLONEL RAYMOND JOHN MARKER, D.S.O., Coldstrea m Guards,Staff Officer, wounded on November 4, has died o f wounds in hospitalat Boulogne, aged 47. He was the eldes t son of Mr. Richard Marker, ofCombe, Honiton, Devon, by hi s marriage with the Hon. VictoriaAlexandrina, daughter of t he ninth Lord Digby. He joined theColdstream Guards in 1888 , obtaining his company in 1898 and majorityin 1903. He bec ame Lieutenant-Colonel in 1911, and saw considerablestaff a nd active service. In the South African campaign he wasempl oyed as a special service officer, and afterwards on the St aff,and was present at the actions at Vet River, Zand River , nearJohannesburg and Pretoria, and at Diamond Hill and Be lfast. He wasmentioned three times in dispatches, receive d the brevet of Major,both medals with seven clasps, and th e D.S.O., and was placed on thelist of officers considere d qualified for Staff employment inconsequence of his servi ce on the Staff in the field. Colonel Markerwas mentioned i n Sir John French's recent dispatches, and decorated byth e French President with the Legion of Honour. He was marrie d in 1906to Beatrice Minnie Shrieve, third daughter of Si r Thomas Jackson, Bt.,and leaves a son, Richard Raymond Kit chener, born in 1908.

      Text: Beatrice Minnie Shrieve JACKSON was born in Hong Kong on 1 9 December1879.
      Beatrice married Raymond John MARKER on 21 November 1906 . Raymond wasborn on 18 April 1867 at Upcerne. He was th e son of Richard MARKERand Victoria Alexandrina DIGBY. Fro m 1888 until his death he servedas an officer in the Coldst ream Guards. He was promoted to Captainin 1898, and serve d in the South African campaign, during which he wasbrevete d to major. As a result of his service on the Staff in the field, he was placed on the list of officers considered qua lified forStaff employment. Raymond was promoted to Majo r in 1903, and toLieutenant-Colonel in 1911. After the outb reak of World War I, heserved on General Haig's staff as As sistant Adjutant and QuarterMaster General (Aldershot), I A rmy Corps Headquarters, General Staff.He was severely wound ed on 4 November 1914. Raymond died of wounds 13November 19 14 in Boulogne, Pas de Calais, France. He was buried inS t Michael's Churchyard in Gittisham, Devonshire, England .
