Helmingham and the Tollemache family have been together fo r manyhundreds of years. The Hall and the old oak trees tha t you see todayhave seen much of the history of England pas s before them, and manygenerations of this family. The Toll emache family has lived in Suffolkfrom shortly after the No rman Conquest to the present day. Their homefor the first 4 00 years was at Bentley, near lpswich, and althoughthere wa s a proud boast, Before the Normans into England came, Bent leywas my seat and Tollemache my name, it seems now certai n that thefamily came over from Avranches on the Normandy c oast. Their name wasspelt Talemache, meaning 'purse bearer' , and it is recorded that HughTollemache was Purse Bearer t o Henry 1.
They remained at Bentley as squires and knights throughou t theturbulent years of those early centuries, fighting fo r both Henry IIagainst the Welsh and Edward I against the S cots and quite oftenagainst their neighbours to retain thei r lands, Two Tollemache knightsfrom Bentley fought at the B attle of Crécy against the French in 1346.
However, in 1487, John Tollemache married Elizabeth Joyce , the heiressof Helmingham, and his son Lionel also marrie d a Joyce. furthercementing the union, and so they moved t o Helmingham where the Joycefamily home of Creke Hall stood . John Tollemache and his wifeproceeded to pull this down a nd build Helmingham, completed in 1510,as it stands today . surrounded by its deep moat, serene gardens anddeer park.
It must have been some years after my family moved to Helmi ngham thatthey started work on the gardens, but old maps an d drawings show thatthe original shape of the main walled g arden predates the house bymany years; it was most probabl y of Saxon origin and constructed toprotect stock from mara uders. There was a wooden palisade to protectthe garden fro m the deer until the present garden wall was built in1745.
