As his two brothers George Mildmay und John Julius had alre ady worked in Japan, he also went to Japan in 1871. He wa s employed with Valmale, Schoene & Milsom, Yokohama # 177 , but joined Strachan & Thomas, Merchants, Yokohama # 63, a lready in 1872. In 1874 he became a clerk at the Mitsubish i Mail Steam Ship Co., Tokyo and shifted to Yokohama; Kaiga n Dori in 1875.
In 1878 he became Assistant Accountant of the Hong Kong an d Shanghai Bank, Yokohama # 62, and in 1882 promoted to Acc ountant of the Kobe Branch, Kobe # 81. In 1886 he was shift ed to Yokohama working as Acting Accountant, Yokohama # 62 , and in 1890 promoted to Sub-Manager, Yokohama # 2.

He was strongly engaged in many companies; besides his jo b at Bennet, Dare & Wilckens he belonged to the Board of Di rectors of several companies, such as the Japan Brewery Co. , Deakin Brothers & Co., The Eastern Whaling Co., etc.
