    He was brought to Singapore in his father's barque, Marsden , in the year 1841. The father Captain George Julius Dare c ontinued his voyage to China, and Mrs. Dare remained behin d in Singapore to await the arrival of a second son, John J ulius Dare.

    Captain G.J. Dare lived in a house on the corner of Beach R oad, now part of the Raffles Hotel property. In those days , Beach Road was Singapore's principal residential quarte r and the houses stood well back in large gardens. A sand y beach ran down to the sea. from the road in front.

     G.M. Dare, who was in the Corps when first founded and w as a corporal when he left for Bangkok in 1859. Mr. Dare te lls us that the old drill ground of the S.V.R. was the comp ound behind the Hon'ble T. Church's house (afterwards the o ld masonic Lodge, now the end block of the Hotel l'Europe.

    In 1864 he went to Japan and started in 1865 as assistant o f W. McDonald, Bill Broker in Yokohama.
    In 1867 he became partner of W. McDonald and they operate d under McDonald & Dare, Bill, Bullion and Ship Brokers, Yo kohama # 60. Later their seat was shifted to Yokohama # 6 4 and as of 1869 they also acted as Marine Surveyor and Lan d Agents. As of 1874 the company was located at Yokoham a # 5.
    In 1877 he stayed in GB where he married Annie Dorothea Car oline EARNSHAW (* 23.01.1857 in Knaresborough, Yorkshire) . They had no children.
    After his return he left M. McDonald and in 1877 he becam e partner in the company of his brother operating under J . J. Dare, Bill, Bullion and General Broker, Yokohama # 76.
    When his brother J. J. Dare died in 1879 he took over the c ompany.
    As of 1882 he is not recorded any more in Japan. He died i n his residence in Singapore on December 15, 1907.
