  • Note:
    REYNOLD DE MOHUN, son and heir, a minor at his father's death. Hiswardship was granted in 121 3 to Henry FitzCount, and on Henry's death in1227 to William Briwere, his own grandfather. H e had livery
    by 1227, when he was made a knight. He accompanied the King on his Frenchexpedition in 1230 , and to Wales in 123i. He was in debt to the Jews in1234, and made a justice of the Common P leas. In 1242 he was to have twogood ships provided for him to follow the King across the se a to Gascony,and in April of that year was a Chief Justice of the Forests South ofTrent. He s erved in the expedition into Wales in 1245, and in 1246refounded the abbey of Newenham at Axm inster. He was also a benefactor ofthe houses of Bruton, Barlinch and Cleeve. In 1252 he wa s appointedkeeper of the royal forests South of Trent, with 100 marks per annum formaintenanc e, and keeper during pleasure of Sauvey Castle, co. Leicester.In 1253 he had grants of free w arren at Dunster, Whichford and Ottery,and licence to hunt hare, fox, cat and badger in Somer set and one othercounty.

    He married, 1stly, Hawise (h). He married, 2ndly, in or before 1243,Isabel, the childless wid ow of Sir Gilbert BASSET, and daughter ofWilliam (DE FERRERS), EARL OF DERBY, by his 1st wif e (to whom she wascoheir), Sibyl, daughter and eventually coheir of William (MARSHAL), EARLO F PEMBROKE. He died 20 January 1257/8, at Tor Mohun in Devon, and wasburied at Newenham in fr ont of the high altar, on the left-hand side.     (h) She was apparently daughter of Geoffrey FitzPiers, Earl of Essex. Theauthor of "Dunster " suggested that she was daughter, and possibly heir,of William Fleming, but after examinatio n of documents cited in theaccount of Streatley given in VCH, Berkshire, he now inclines to c reditthe older view as above. A deed executed by her as Domina Hawise deMohun is copied in t he Pole MS.

    Note: At least for one daughter, Burke's Peerage has Hawise, daughter ofWilliam Fleming, as t he mother. It may be incorrect, but maybe therewere two Hawises as his first wives.

    Reginald de Mohun, in minority at the decease of his father in 1213, was given in wardship t o Henry Fitz-Count, son of the Earl of Cornwall. In the 26th Henry III [1242] this Reginal d was constituted chief justice of all the forests south of Trent, and, in some years afterwa rds, governor of Saubeye Castle in Leicestershire. In the 41st of the same reign [1247], h e had a military summons to march against the Welsh. He m. 1st, Hawise, sister of Humphrey d e Bohun, Earl of Hereford, and had a son, John, his successor. He m. 2ndly, Isabel, dau. o f William de Ferrers, Earl of Derby (and co-heir of Sibilla, her mother, sister and co-heir o f Anselm Marshal, last Earl of Pembroke, of that family), by whom he had a son, William.
