From Family Notes: John Franklin Redd SR., was born in Virginia, as some of his children including John Franklin Ress JR., and one of his sisters were sent back to Virginia to a school to finish their education.

Spotsylvania Co., VA: Formed in 1720 From Essex, King & Queen, and King William Counties.

Orange County was formed from Spotsylvania in 1734 and was named not from the color of its soil as erroneously stated by Howe and others for there is no soil of orange color in the County but for William Prince of Orange one of England's most worthy kings.

(I cannot find an historical document containing an "F." or "Franklin"-but see the child of Lucy REDD SHINAULT!)

Spotsylvania and Caroline Counties are beside each other in VA. Orange is also just to the Northwest of Spotylvania.

Some information is from Kathryn Lindstrom from Lincoln Co. Genealogical Library vertical files in Fayetteville, TN.

This is what Sandra Vickers Brown wrote back in 1998 "My dad's mother was Cora Jane Cheeves. Her mother was Victoria Woodard Smith. I came across a Bible belonging to Victoria in the possession of my second cousin who's mother was Cora's sister. He lives in Huntsville, AL. I found in this Bible names and dates that I felt might help us locate more info about Victoria, her mother Rachel who married a Robert Smith or other family. Inside was this: John Redd died 7-30-1855 age 62 years old. Suzannah Redd died 7-3-1873. With this info along with the 1850 Bedford Co., TN census I found that John then was born in 1784 and that Suzannah was born in 1803. Now what I would like to find out is the connection with my great grandmother and the Redd's. Also you may know something else. There is also a Susan E. Melson died 5-7-1887 in the Bible. Could this be John and Susannah's daughter? Other info in this Bible: S. V. Smith borned 8-2-1866, Mita Jane Smith born 10-20-1881, Nannie Lee Arnold born 7-13-1888 and John Smith died 10-26-1946 age 62 years old. There is an inscription also: WHEN THIS YOU SEE REMEMBER ME signed Sallie Melson. If you could help us with any of this we would be so grateful. I do know the John Smith was a stepbrother to Cora Cheeves. He married Tennie ???? They were to have lived on "POORGRAB" Rd near Petersburg, TN. May have been buried there. -Sandra Vickers Brown. Her e-mail was cherokee@naxs.net (1998).

There is a Montgomery Co., TN (very north) land grant on 25 Sep 1827 to Mordica REDD for 300 acres surveyed on 1 May 1826.

Fayetteville Observer, 24 May 1855: John F. Redd has his name signed to a Prohibitiory Call: The following call-formidable in numbers and respectability-had been handed us for publication in the Observer, with a request that we would state that the signers are residents of the 10th civil district-that they are not members of any temperance organization, and that there were between twenty and thirty other signatures, which were not handed in in season to appear in print: We whose names are annexed, being voters of Lincoln County, TN deploring the ruionouse effects of the intemperate use of intoxicating drinks.....

Will in Lincoln Co., TN Will Book 2, page 136: Will of John Redd, deceased: I John Redd of the county of Lincoln and state of Tennessee, do make and publish this my last will and testament in the manner and form following, viz. 1st, to my beloved and affectionate wife, Susan C.
