Her parents were James and Mary Gillespie Persinger. In 1830, Catherine's family was living in Perry County, IN. She was born two years later in 1832, so probably, she was born there. In 1836, after a board maker had insulted Catherine's mother, he was killed by Catherine's father. That night the family fled Indiana and went to San Augustine County, in the Republic of Texas. They left all of their possessions in Indiana even their surname. Now their surname was Hardy. Later, they moved on a land grant in Jasper County which became a part of Newton County. The Hardy Cemetery is located on this land. Probably both Catherine's father and mother are buried there, although no gravestone marks their graves. Perhaps, that is where Catherine and her husband, James Weeks, were buried since their gravestones also have not been found. Catherine and James were married in Newton County on Oct. 20, 1847. They had five children - Mary Ursula, James Robert, Lewis Cooper, Martha Ann, and Sarah Jane. Catherine's husband was killed after 1861 and then she married William Camron Cooper on March 12, 1863 in Newton County. They had one child, a daughter named Joanner. Quality: 3 Text: JAMES PERSINGER, born ca. 1795, in Kanawa County, WV, to John Persinger and Elizabeth Kimberline Persinger. He married (Polly) Gillespie, born ca. 1806 in Kanawa County, WV, on Feb. 14, 1822. He was a farmer, and in 1832, he moved to Perry County, IN with his wife and four children: Ursula, General Jackson, Kenneth A. and James S. In 1836, while building the Persinger's new house, a worker insulted his wife, and to defend her honor, James and the man fought, and the worker was killed(.) That night, the family fled Indiana with only what they could carry, seeking a sanctuary beyond the jurisdiction of the United States. With the help of friends, who were of the Masonic order, the family was secretly guided from community to community by Masonic members in each area. They were finally met by the Gillespie family, who lived in Mexico, later to become the east Texas county of San Augustine. Having left all their possessions behind in Indiana, and to start a new life, they changed their surname from Persinger to Hardy. They arrived at their new home in the winter of 1836, and James served with Captain Price's Kentucky Volunteers in the Texas Army from May 20 to Sept. 1, 1836. After Texas was declared independent from Mexico, he received land grants from the Republic of Texas, and moved his family to the new land in Jasper District, in what is now Newton County. The Hardy Cemetery is located on that land, and he and his wife are probably buried there, though no stones mark their graves. A son, Joseph Lane Hardy, born Jan. 29, 1844, in Newton County, married Martha Ann Langham Oct. 23, 1866, in Newton County. He died Oct. 17, 1909, and they are buried in the Maple Grove cemetery, Minden, Rusk County, TX. They were my great-grandparents. My grandfather, Charlie Johnson Hardy, born Aug. 20, 1868, died April 30, 1966, married Emma Gertrude Pleasant, born Dec. 22, 1876, died March 3, 1961, on Nov. 20, 1897, in Nacogdoches County. Their children were twins, Blanche L. and Bernice L.; Beulah Beatrice; Luther Charles and Paul Buford. They are all buried in the Black Jack Cemetery, Nacogdoches County, TX.
