Wits. John King, Daniell Williams, RALPH RACHELL, Henry RANDOLPH and John COUGHLAN.
William ROOKINGS, a lieutenant of Nathaniel BACON in his famous rebellion, led the attack on Arthur ALLEN'S home, now known as Bacon's Castle 1
  • Note: Ralph ROTCHELL acquired 200 acres of land in Charles City Co.,Va. by patent in 1670; which was first granted to Elias OSBORNE in 1668. Magazine of Va. Gen. Society, Vol. 22, Feb. 1984, no. 1, p. 16-17
  • Note: Charles City Co. determined Ralph ROTCHELL to be 'levy free' (exempt from taxes). Persons who were levy free, were usually 60 years of age or older. In Charles City County, Va., court records dated 16 Aug. 1678, Ralph ROTCHELL was described as a poor, aged man, showing by certificate from Surry Co. his great age is exempted from all levies.
  • Note: his wife Elizabeth as executor of his will filed suit against John RIX, and Richard JONES Extrs. of Henry PRESTON by her. There was also an order against the sheriff for 350 lbs. tobacco
  • Note: wife Elizabeth makes John KING her attorney against Capt. Nicholas WYAT, executor of Wm. ROOKINGS, for money due her late husband. Aug. 5, 1679, William HARRISON, attorney for Elizabeth ROCHELLE, executrix of Ralph ROCHELLE, obtained a judgement against John RIX and Richard JONES, adm of Henry PRESTON in Charles City Co. (Bk 1677-1679, p. 416)
  • Note: Elizabeth ROCHELL is said to have had 3 taxables in her household in 1698; one of these is said to have been George ROCHELLE. Another Ralph ROTCHEL emigrated to America about 1689, where he appears as a headright to Mr. WALLIS of Lower Norfolk Co., Va. This is about all we know of Ralph ROCHELL at this time. No documentation to confirm the names of his children. Only a presumption of evidence can be concluded, George along with William and possibly John were his sons. JORDANS Upward as they have been given to him who informed June the 10th 1668, Ralph RACHELL - 01 (Taken by George JORDAN). SOURCE - 'Magazine of Va. Gen. Society', Vol. 22, Feb. 1984, no. 1, p. 16-17, Surry Co.,Va. - Georgia State Archives, 1991, Copy. This was the first list, now in existence, that was taken in Surry therefore he may have arrived several years before that time. CENSUS-Census of Tithables in Surry County in the year 1668. Until after the Revolution, taxes were chiefly imposed in Va. according to the number of the tithables in each county. The tithables consisted of all male natives of the country and imported free persons above sixteen; and all male white servants, and all female white servants who worked in the ground, and all male and female negro and Indian servants, whether above or under sixteen. The population was generally estimated as four times the tithables. Hence the population of Surry, judging from the whole number of tithables (434) was about 1736 persons in 1668. The wealth of a man was for the most part measured by the number of his family and dependants. The following is a census of tithables for Surry County during the year 1668. The number of small planters must have been very large. There must have been at this time very few negroes in Surry county. Commission of the Peace, Dec. 20 1668: Lt. Col. George JORDAN, Capt. Lawrence BAKER, Mr. Arthur ALLEN, Mr. Tho. WARREN, Capt. John GROVE, Maj. Will. MARIOTT, Capt. Wm. COCKERSHAM. Capt. Wm. BROWN, Mr. Thos. BINNS, Mr. Charles BARHAM, Mr. Randall HOLT, Mr. Tho. FLOOD.
