Subject: Re: Lewis Payne
I'll share what I know about Lewis Paine b. abt 1794 in Surry Co NC. Was there until some time about 1820 (signed bond in Surry for sister Rachael in 1820). His first child Taswell/Hassle was born about 1822 in Spartanburg SC, (Hazzle is son of Daniel Jackson, DSP) sister Rachael was there and so was brother Daniel Jackson Paine. Lewis's wife was thought to be anna but it look like it could arma probably Irma on the 1850 census in Cherokee Co NC she was born in SC. There was a John Paine in Spartanburg at the same time, can't be sure it was there father.
Lewis, Moses, Thomas and father John were in Rutherford Co NC in 1840. I found a land grant to John Pain in Rutherford Co in 1838. Lewis (blacksmith) and Daniel (blacksmith) were in Cherokee in 1850.
Lewis' brothers John (blacksmith) & Nathaniel were both with Winfield Scott when he remove the Cherokee Indians in 1838 from Western NC and North Ga. And they were on the 1840 Union Co GA. By 1850 Moses was in Union Co.
Daniel's wife Elizabeth Walker died about this time and he remarried and moved to Fannin Co. Ga. (Was Part of Union co Ga.)
Lewis and Sister Racheal Ezell both were in Cherokee Co NC in 1860. Not sure but think they all may have move back to SC.
Lewis was a blacksmith and a preacher.
Several of Moses' sons were blacksmith, farmer, preachers. My father has the carpenter tools belonging to Moses son David Washington Paine/Payne. Much to long and rambling, hope you can follow. Geri

David, when I started out trying to trace our John Pain I thought he was probably out of Rowan Co. N.C. and I was able to find a Philadelphia Ledford, daughter of John Ledford Sr. who's age was about right to be John's wife. Both families moved to Union, Fannin and Cherokee Co NC. about the same time but, since I have been able to find more information about my family in Union, Fannin Co. Ga. and Cherokee Co N.C. I've found out that in 1810 John & Philadelphia lived in Surry Co NC and move to Spartanburg, S.C. in the early 1820 and in the 1830's moved to Rutherford N.C. In 1840 Union Co census, just after the Indian removal, 2 of John's son showed up in Union Co: (John Payne wife Paralee Walker (Blacksmith) and (Nathanial S Payne b.1815 married Mary More in Union Co/. Blacksmith).
Lewis Payne b.1798 in Surry CO NC move to Cherokee Co N.C. about 1841/2.(wife Arma/Irma) )Blacksmith.
Rachael Payne Ezell b. 1800 move to Cherokee Co in 1850s. (husband Samuel Ezell)
Daniel Jackson Payne b.1817 was in Cherokee Co N.C. and McMann Co TN. during 1850 (1st Elizabeth Walker). Later move to Fannin Co. (Blacksmith)
Moses Jesse Payne b.1806 move to Union 1841/1 ( Wife Elizabeth Walker).
Mary Paine M.1837 William Taylor and moved to Union Co. after Moses died cir. 1858.
Probably other children I don't know about.
Now, back to John & Philadelphia in 1790's Moses Ayres & Abigail Payne were in Surry Co NC. and we know that they had a child with them named Moses Payne b cir. 1777.
I keep coming back to the fact John & Moses were brother. Could it be they were children of Abigail ? Jimmy Payne tell us that there is a problem with DNA about that generation. I Haven't seen that infor in DNA. So, finally I'm not sure what Philadelphia's name was. Could well be, Ayers. Sincerely, Geri Payne Stotts
