Name: George Washington Covell 1
Birth: ABT. 1834 in Carroll, Chautauqua Co., NY 2
Death: BET. 1 JUN 1855 - 1 JAN 1857 in South Valley, Cattaraugus Co., NY 3
George Washington Covell was born about 1834 and died between June 1, 1855, the official date of the 1855 census, and January 1, 1857, when a family property deed was written without including his name. Neither his name, nor a widow's name, nor a child's name is on the deed, therefore, he must have died unmarried and without leaving children. This is confirmed by the probate file of Lewis Covell who died in 1887, which also does not mention George, nor a wife nor children of George.
This is further confirmed by the fact that there is no record of George Washington Covell in the 1880 census of the USA, nor in the 1881 census of Canada. There was a George Covil, married, with six children and a grandson, in Ticonderoga, Essex County, NY. He cannot be the George Covell of interest unless that entire family died before Lewis Covell died in 1887. I found no other possible record of George Washington Covell. New York State did not record deaths until 1881.
Most probably, George Washington Covell was buried next to his father, who died in 1854. Neither grave has been found. If they were buried on their farm in South Valley, they were either moved to another site because of the Kinzua dam project which flooded the Covell property, or their graves are now underwater.
