    From: "Harold Smith"
I want to clarify something of which I myself believe in and of which is out there in the genealogy world regarding the supposed freeman status of William Read/Reed of Kent County, England, and the one who departed Gravesend, Kent County, England 25 July 1635 and landed in VIRGINIA. All postings that I have seen have not recognized that he landed in Virginia and that he had to have landed sometime around 25 September.

To me what needs clarification is the statement that this William Read/Reed received freeman status on l8 May 1635. The following website Has indicated that William Read/Reed of the ship Assurance of London received freeman status on 18 May 1635 and referenced New England Historic Genealogical Society Register April 1934. That is only part of the story and as Paul Harvey would say "now here is the rest of the story."

In the memoir section of the New England Historic Genealogical Society Register of April 1934 on page 198 is a memoir of Henry Beecher Reed, of Lowell and Weymouth, Massachusetts. I will quote from the second paragraph of Henry Beecher Reed's memoir as follows:

"He traced his descent from William Reed, a native of England, who immigrated to New England on the Assurance in 1635 and settled at Weymouth where he was admitted a freeman 18 May 1653 and was a deputy(sic) to the General Court. etc"

The above contains errors however I wish to continue on regarding the website which contains this reference. It says as follows:

"I found another reference in Hotten's showing the ship "Assurance de Lo" leaving England 24 July 1635 sailing to Virginia. Since Zachary's ship was did not drop anchor in Massachusetts Bay until 6 May 1635, the time factor seems to indicate that this ship was probably not the "Assurance". A period of time must be allowed for unloading, repairs, reloading at both ends of a 40-50 day return voyage, which would put some question on a 24 July sailing. But we cannot eliminate the "Assurance" completely as it is just barely possible although not probable."

The above paragraph in reality was reference to a Zachary Bicknell and his name does not appear on the list of passengers departing Gravesend on 24 or 25 July 1635. However what this does show that it would be impossible for the William Read/Reed to have been made a freeman on 18 May 1635. Now according to The History of Weymouth Volume 4 and also another book titled Genealogies of the Early Families of Weymouth by George Walter Chamberlain which is two volumes in one with the later published by Genealogical Publishing Co. Inc. Baltimore Maryland in 1984. This book is identical to volumes 3 & 4 of the History of Weymouth and contains the same page numbers.

On page page 568 it states "1. WILLIAM REED was made a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 18 May, 1653. The original list of freemen shows that he was on that day an inhabitant of Weymouth. (Massachusetts Bay Colony Records, 4, Pt. 1, p. 460.) Now I myself, have been unable to locate this reference at Library of Michigan but trust the people at Weymouth Historical Genealogical Society in the work that they have done. PLEASE NOTE DATE of 18 May 1653 wereas the other date was 18 May 1635. You can see that the memoir of Henry Beecher Reed showed the year 1635 INSTEAD of 1653.

Before closing, it is shocking to see 99% of postings, that give BOTH William Read and William Read/Reed with the same parents. And this also involves, as they do have the father of William Read of Batcombe as William Read and mother as Lucy Heneage. Now according to what I read Lucy had died in 1621 and William Read was also dead in 1629. So read the following from page 565 under William Read of Batcombe, husband of Susannah Hayme/Hayne and Ruth Crooke:

"William Reade, son of the widow Reade of Batcombe, in the County of Somerset, married at Gillingham, in the County of Dorsetl, 12 Oct. 1629, Susannah Hayme, daughter of Edward and Joanna Hayme of Gilolingham. (Parish Register of Gillingham.)

Based upon the above quote one can believe that William Reade's mother was alive in 1629. Further the other websites that I have given you would tend to believe that William Read/Reed who migrated on the Assurance to Virginia and left Gravesend was undoubtly the son of Sir William Read and Lucy Heneage.

There is a belief that William Read of Batcombe, Somerset, England COULD BE a brother of John Read you died in 1685 in Rehoboth at 87 years of age. His pedigree is vain but if one can find a reliable one this could fit William Read who died in New London County, Connecticut in 1679, who was the husband only of Susannah Hayme/Hayne and Ruth Crooke.

My best to everyone. Take care and God Bless.
