March 20, 1732, John Howell Jr.'s will proved by Elizabeth Shelby.

By 1722 historians Turner and Bridger, state that Bertie Precinct, which for a long time was politically connected with Edgecombe Co. N.C. was formed and the region settled by the highest type of Virgina manhood.

The mouth of Town Creek marked the beginning of this setlement in 1720, however two later the present vicinity of Tarbo was settled by a small part of Virginias. The land upon the city was erected had formerly been the property of Joseph Howell Jr. on N.C. and a descendant of John Howell Sr.

John Howell Jr. of Va. was designated as John Howell Sr. in N.C. Of his rights we have the following record:

At council in Edenton(the colonial capitol) March 15, 1743, John Howell of Bertie Co. N.C. was admitted to prove his right in order to take up land.
