Mormon Battalion at Los Angeles, CA in Indian raid:
The Journal of Nathaniel V. Jones, with the Mormon Battalion
May 8:?Today news came that General Kearney had arrived at San Pedro. This morning there was a detachment of twenty ordered out to take some Indians in the mountains. I was detailed as one of the number. On the 9th, at the mouth of the canyon, we separated, eight of us went up on the mountain to cut off their escape in that way. We attacked them in the head of the canyon. We killed six of them. How many there were in the first place I do not know but there were some escaped certain. We then returned to camp just before night. There were two men wounded, one in the face and one in the thigh (Benjamin F. Mayfield and Samuel Chapin). though not dangerous. There was one Spaniard wounded in the [p.17] leg. The Spaniards used the Indians very brutally, scalped them and cut off their ears and nose before we knew what they were about or we would have prevented them. We learned that General Kearney came into the Pueblo with Col. Stephenson.

In a letter from Marjorie Hughes, Secretary of the Nevada State Museum, she says: "The Territorial Seal of Nevada was designed by Orion Clemens, brother of Samuel Clemens, while he served as Secretary under Governor Nye. It was approved by the Territorial Legislature in 1861. The State Seal was first mentioned in the Nevada Constitutional Convention, July 7, 1867, when Samuel Chapin, Virginia City miner and a delegate to the convention suggested appointment of a committee for a State Seal and coat-of-arms."

Delagate to the Nevada Constitutional Convention 4 July 1864 Carson City Nevada:
Samuel Judson Chapin was born 1812 Massachusetts, age 52 who lived in Illinois, Michigan, and California. He was living in Storey County Neveda for four years and worked as a miner prior to the convention. His presidential vote in 1860 was for Abraham Lincoln. He died in 1890 in California. see Andrew J. Marsh report on the convention and Founding the Far West: California, Oregon, and Nevada, 1840-1890 By David Alan Johnson.

Official report of the debates and proceedings in the Constitutional ...
By Nevada. Constitutional Convention, Andrew Jackson Marsh:
Mr. Chapin: It occurs to me that there is another matter requiring some little labor, upon which a committee might very well be appointed. I therefore move that a committee of seven be appointed on a State Seal and Coat of Arms, in order that we may have that subject in readiness when we get to it.
The question was taken, and the motion was agreed to.
Subsequently the President appointed as such Committee on State Seal, etc., Messrs. Chapin, Warwick, Tagliabue, Earl, Wetherill, Folsom, and Hudson.
