The following article was written by Martha McKee Burt and included in"Chickasaw (MS) County History." Then on the internet on a Family TreeMaker page. Following is Ms. Burt's article:

"Mary Powell Cannon, wife of Alton Cannon (See story) was born 23 August 1789 in Pickens County South Carolina. She was the eldest child ofJames Powell and Rebecca Bynum. James Powell was born ca 1759 inVirginia to John Powell and Alice Brewer. Rebecca Bynum was born ca 1769in North Carolina to William Bynum and his wife Mary. Much of thisinformation was contained in a book, a history of Blount County,Alabama, written by a brother of Mary Powell, George Powell, who wasborn 11November 1794. George married in 1812 Elizabeth Kirksey, daughter of Jonathan and Nancy Kirksey. They moved from Pendelton SouthCarolina to Blount County where George was a teacher and longtimesurveyor of the area; making initial mineral deposit locations. APresbyterian, he and his wife reared 11 children and owned 27 slaves atone time. His book was published by the Blount County HistoricalSociety. George died 5 February 1872.
"Other brothers and sisters of Mary and George Powell were Alice marJonathan Liverman, Telitha (or Tabitha) mar Zachariah Stephens, Greenmar Patsy Tidmore, Nancy mar Redding Reid, Violante (or Violanta) m.Allen Reid, Letitia m. Elias Reid, and Gray m. Manila Brindley.Descendants of some of these came on to Mississippi. Many of the Bynumfamily married Murphrees and Easleys, who also came to Chickasaw Co.Mary Powell was the great-granddaughter of another John Powell and hiswife Mary Cromwell, who the family claims is a direct relative of OliverCromwell.

"Rebecca Bynum Powell died 1850 in Blount County; her husband JamesPowell died in 1855 and both are buried Mt. Moriah Cemetery. "Manylibraries in the south have copies of the book on the Bynum family. Itwas written years ago, however, and lacks much information now availableon the families involved through their marriages. Earlier ancestors ofRebecca include Mizell, Blow (Balou), Gray, and John and Elias Fort,Richard Jordan and Elizabeth Reynolds. "Mary Powell Cannon died 1867 andis buried in Sapp Cemetery near Cullman AL beside her husband JamesPowell."
