As a lad of fifteen Carl began work in the coal mines. From that beginning, with only a grade school education he went on to become one of the foremost authorities in America on beekeeping and honey production. Besides having his own apiaries, he was the Superintendent of the Division of Apiary Inspection for the Illinois Department of Agriculture for more than thirty years.
The quality of his comb honey was highly acclaimed by his peers and earned him a number of national awards. As an officer of the American Beekeeping Federation and a member of several of its working committees, Carl was instrumental in formulating the government standards for liquid honey. His prominence in his chosen field afforded him numerous opportunities to lecture at universities and technical seminars. He wrote many articles for professional journals. His book, "Honey in the Comb" is a valued reference for both established apiarists and neophytes seeking to enter the field. On the lighter side, "The Covered Bridge," is his autobiography.
