    2. Title: THOMAS HOWARD LINEAGEMarguerite Prince Songy (View posts) Posted: 15 Dec 1999 7:00AM Classification: Biography Surnames: THOMAS HOWARD, JAMES HOWARD, SARAH TITUS HOWARD, LUKE LIDNEY HOWARD, CLARISSA COTTON HOWARD, ABNER PERRY HOWARD, ELIZABETH CAROLINE MERCER CONNER, ELIZABETH CONNER HOWARD, ANNABELLE HOWARD PRINCE, HOPE MILLER PRINCE, HOWARD MILLER PRINCE, BONNIE LOIS PRINE PRINCE the following is a brief EXCERPT of how the lineage went for the Thomas Howard branch of the HOWARD family, I am starting at near the end, as the article is very long and difficult to understand... From the "What's your Family Line", by Adelle Bartlett Harper, published in a Longview TX newspaper back in the early 70s. This article was sent to Mrs. Weldon Brewster, a Howard cousin now deceased...Matthew Arundel/Howard (he had taken his mother's maiden name to escape execution by King Edward VI, as his father had been...) married first Margaret Wiloughby and had a son THOMAS, who was a soldier of fortune in Europe. He married 2nd, Ann Thoroughgood, by whom he had three sons:1. Matthew, 2. Thomas and 3. Frederick, who being younger and portionless off-spring had to seek fourtune for themselves. They followed the trend of the day to emmigrate to America the Land of Promise, so in company with the Thoroughgood family, they all came to America.Matthew Howard, eldest son of Thomas Arundel / Howard and Ann Thoroughgood, was settled in Virginia before 1623, on the East bank of the Elizabeth River near the Parish of Norfolk. He had a large tract of land and several white servants. He received a grant of land in 1638. His second wife (Ann Hall?) was the mother of his children; Henry, Philip, Samuel, John, Cornelius, Matthew, Jr., Ann, (who married a Phillips), and Elizabeth, (who married a Ridgeley.)Thomas HOWARD and Fredrick HOWARD remained in Virginia and THOMAS HOWARD (MY line) appears in the records of York Co where his son James (IST) is also named in the records of the County. The next records of JAMES HOWARD are found in Nansemond Co., VA on Aug 20, 1691. James Howard of Kingsale patented 500 acres in the upper Parish of Nansemond, etc. In 1704 in Nansemond, James Howard held 700 acres and his son James, II, held 25 acres. On Oct 6, 1729 James Howard, (I) made his will in Bertie, NC and mentions son James (II) and his Brothers Edward, John, Joseph and Stephen. The deeds and court minutes showed these four brothers living on branches of New River in Onslow Co., NC in 1733-1745. In 1745 both stephen and his brother Edward died.In 1777, Stephen Howard (possibly a son of Stephen) died in Union Co., SC, he mentions his wife Mary, a son Elihu, mentions but does not name "all the rest of my beloved children". This will was witnessed by Nehemiah, Edey (Edith) and Ann Howard.James Howard, Jr. (II) removed with his father James Howard (I) and the family from Nansemond Co to NC; land and court records showing that he lived in Bertie and Onslow Counties. No will has been found for James (II), but his son Nehemiah had family records.Nehemiah Howard emigrated from SC to Elbert Co., GA where he settled and died. His will was probated April 1, 1798 in Elbert Co, recorded in book 1791-1803, sect. B, pages 34, 35, 36. Witnesses Ralph Owen, Moses Haynes, Test. Isaac Barnett, Thos.
