Bible of John Taylor: "On 3 Feb 1735, I gave my daughter, Mary, in marriage to Joseph Penn. Spotsylvania County, Virginia Deed Bk F pg 277--19 sep 1763--John Taylor of Caroline County, Virginia, pays Joseph Penn 6 shillings for a tract of ground containing 265 acres, being land Joseph is living on, and all Joseph's personal estate for the use of John Penn, his sons: Phillip,Moses, Thomas and daughters: Catherine who married Larkin Gatewood and Mary, the daughter of Joseph and Frances

Will of John Taylor, Granville County, North Carolina, Bk 2 pg 47--names the children of his deceased daughter, Mary who married Joseph Penn

Ancestral File submission states that Joseph and first wife, Mary, are buried in McPelah Cemetery, Townsville, Granville County, North Carolina. It also states that Joseph's parents are George Penn and Elizabeth Ann Madison--that he had a 2nd wife, Elizabeth

From Bob Allen, Penn researcher and descendant of Joseph Penn: The names and birthdates of their children through Thomas Penn born in 1749 were recorded in the abstract of John Taylor Bible (except for the name of their eldest child, born on 13 Dec. 1736 which was obliterated from the abstract of the bible by 1903). For more information about the John Taylor bible see the notes to his son, John Penn. The fact that the child born on 13 Dec. 1736 was their son, John Penn, comes from the William Edmunds journal which states that John Penn (grandfather of his wife) was born on 13 Dec. 1736 and was the son of Joseph Penn and Mary Taylor. Also there is a 1761 Deed from Joseph Penn to John Penn "son of the said Joseph Penn" which proves that Joseph Penn had a son John who was not otherwise listed in the named children in the John Taylor bible abstract.

The children of Elizabeth and Joseph Penn were Phillip. Moses, Thomas, Catherine, Mary and Francis. "Children of said Joseph, wife Elizabeth Penn. Estate put in trust September 19th, 1763.
