The village of HARTLEY hada keep or small castle in the 13th century. Designed to defendthe area from the Scottish border raiders, it is now lostwithin farm buildings on the moorside. The raiders drove theHARTLEYs south, through the "Trough of Bowland" and they thensettled in the Pendle area of Lancashire. There are hundreds ofHARTLEYs in the area, mainly Johns who begat Johns, making thedetailed searching a genealogists nightmare. Links developedbetween Colne, Trawden, Winewall, and Wycoller in Lancashireand Laneshaw Bridge, Stanbury, Haworth, and Oxenhope inYorkshire. My own traced ancestors stem from Haworth andOxenhope, but there are intriguing links to Wycoller".
