  • ID: I629
  • Title: Sir 1
  • Name: Henry 'Hotspur' PERCY 1
  • Sex: M
  • Change Date: 17 NOV 2012
  • Birth: 20 MAY 1364 1
  • Death: 21 JUL 1403 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire
  • Note: In 1401 King Henry IV appointed Percy to suppress the rebellion of Wales under Owain Glyndwr. Percy complained of lack of support from the crown, and could see that oppressive legislation was driving more Welsh to join the rebellion. He negotiated with Glyndwr, and changed sides. On 21 July 1603, Henry of Monmouth (the 16-year-old future Henry V) reached Shrewsbury with his army before Percy's forces, chose his ground, and forced the battle. Percy was killed and his forces defeated. 1
  • Burial: NOV 1404
  • Note: Buried first at Whitchurch, two days after which (on the rumour that he was still alive) his body was disinterred, beheaded, quartered, and placed on public exhibition. On 3 November 1404 King Henry IV ordered that his remains be returned to his widow, who buried them in the Northumberland tomb at York Minster. 2 3
