  • ID: I105
  • Name: Warren HASTINGS
  • Sex: M
  • Change Date: 21 JUL 2014
  • Note: There is no documentary evidence that Warren Hastings was the father of Eliza Hancock, but some contemporary observers concluded that he and her mother had been intimate, while on the other hand Philadelphia and Tysoe Saul Hancock were believed scarcely to have consummated their marriage. Hastings's paternity is strongly suspected by some modern commentators, but the idea is opposed by others. 1
  • Birth: 06 DEC 1732 in Churchill, Oxfordshire
  • Baptism: 15 DEC 1732 Churchill, Oxfordshire 2

Marriage 2 Philadelphia AUSTEN b: 1730 in Tonbridge, Kent
    • Event: Liaison
    • Note:
It is believed by some that, after the death of his wife, Warren Hastings was given close comfort by Philadelphia Hancock, and that he was the natural father of her daughter Eliza. There is no written evidence of this, and many who have studied her are sceptical. My own view is that nothing is proven unless there is evidence.
The RootsWeb software is displaying this possible liaison as a marriage, which it was not there is no field for liaisons, affairs, etc.
