    HI ,
I am doing research for a friend on his family. His grandmother was
Arminta Reeder. She had passed on by the time he was born. His mother had
been raised by relatives because of some family difficulties. I am trying
to figure out her family line. Arminta's father was a Levi F. Murray.

Levi F. Murray went by L.F. Murray. A notice in the Frederick paper of
March 14, 1927, says he was 82 years, 5months and 15 days of age at his
death. I used this to calculate his birthdate, so the day may be off by a
few days. The article states he was married twice and only lists children
from a 2nd marriage. They are Elmer who is in China, Sherman who is in
Washington, and Alminta Reeder of Frederick. It states he was born in
Westmoreland County in Pennsylvania. According to the article his father and
4 brothers were pastors for the Church of the Brethren and 2 brothers were
pastors for the Church of God. It seems he traveled around to West Virginia
    and parts of Maryland

Arminta was born in April 1893. In the 1910 census of Uniontown,
Carroll County, Maryland, I found a Levi P. Murray. He is married to an Ida
    E. Levi is 62 and his wife is 50. It shows they have been married 6 years
and there are no children from this marriage. There are 3 children listed.
Arminta M, who is 17, Elmer L. who is 14, and Carrolton who is 10. Arminta
and Elmer were born in W. Virginia, Carrollton was born in Maryland. Levi
and both his parents were born in Pennsylvania. His occupation is
    Minister/preaching the gospel.
I cannot find him in the 1920 census and by 1930 he is deceased.
In looking at the Cemetery Records in Carroll County , I found a Rev. L. F.
Murray buried at Bethel Carroll Church of the Brethren Cemetery. It lists 2
wives. Ida and an Arilla M. The tombstone is marked "our mother". Levi was
    married 3 times.
I also found that Arminta had another brother (half brother) Roscoe
Covect Murray. His obit reads Obituary in the Frederick newspaper in
    February 1969 reads:
Roscoe Covert Murray, 131 West Third Street, a well known retired hardware
dealer, died Tuesday evening at Western Maryland Hospital after a lengthy
illness. He was born in Hereford, West Virginia July 27, 1891, a son of the
late Rev. Levi F. and Arrilla Van Gorder Murray. Surviving is his wife,
Mrs. Dorothy R. Bell Murray, one son Charles F. Murray, this city and two
grandchildren Ross Covert Murray and Gail Louise Murray.

The birth date of your Sherman and the fact he was born in W. Virginia
struck me as similar. Are you sure of the last name Vanuirk? Could it be
Van Gorder? I have searched the Van Gorder line and they originate in
    Lawrence County, Pennsylvania.

Any insights you can give would be helpful.

    Thank you

    Dottie

    Hi George,
Isn't it these little mysteries to solve that make genealogy so addictive?

Couple of quick thoughts. Firstly, for the next few days I will be working
nites so no response only means that I'm busy with that part of my life that
    interferes with this stuff.
2ndly, I am doing this research for a friend and information I can get is
somewhat limited. His mother is Betty Armita Reeder (still living in
Frederick,Maryland). I cannot speak with Betty directly and she is up in years
with Alzheimers. She was raised by some aunts/uncles but not sure from which
side, nor am i clear on the reasons why. She is reluctant to talk about family.
My friend is her son, and like many younger males does not know much about
family history etc. (not meaning to offend, just speaking from my own experience
    within my family)
Her mother was Arminta Myrtle Murray. She was born April 1, 1893,and died
September 29, 1950. She married Norman Oscar Reeder, Feb. 11, 1922.
Her is her death notice in the local newspaper. (I don't have a working
    scanner at present.)
    Mrs. Norman O. Reeder
Mrs. Armita Myrtle Reeder wife of Norman O. Reeder died at her home, 111
West Franklin Steet Hagerstown, Friday morninag at 2:50 o'clock after an
    illness
of several months, aged 57 years.
She was a daughter of the late leve Franklin and Arilla VanGorder Murray
and a devout member of first Church of God, Hagerstown.
(This is the line you want to hear:-) ) Surviving are her husband, 2 sons
and a daughter, Warrant officer James A. Reed, fort meade; Paul L. Reeder, at
home; Mrs. Bernanrd R. Baumgardner, Jr., this City; Four brothers, Sheman E.
Murray Stocton, Cal.; Roscoe C. Murray this city,; Lee Murray, Paris, France,
Carrolton M. Murray, this city. Four grandchildren also survive.
The body rests at the funeral home, 106 Est church Street where friends
    may
call. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Sunday afternoon at two
o'clock. Interment in Mount Olivet cemetery. M.R. Etchison and son Funeral
    directors.

This notice gives you the information you are looking for. I sent you
information re: Levi Murray and also information on Roscoe's obit. Once i get
the scanner working i can send you copies of them all. If you subscribe to the
newspaper services at ancestry.com you can find Levi Murray's death notice in
the paper on line. Look in Frederick Maryland Paper of March 14,1927. Its on
    the
    front page.

Sherman's death certificate, shows he was born in West Virginia, which
matches information I have found on Roscoe (Ross)Elmer Lee and Arminta.
His mother's name has similarities to what we know....Aurilla Vankuirk vs
Arilla Van Gorder. I would put that off to Marjorie possibly not really knowing
his mother's name. It is Van Gordon on both Roscoe's and Arminta's death
notice. (i dont have death certificates on either of them, that will require
    getting information from Annapolis)
I suspect the wrong name for his father is again misinformation. Marjorie
could have been guessing at the name. Levi Murray seems to be mentioned as L.
    F. Murray frequently. He did travel in the Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia
area and she could have heard that at some point in her life.
Levi was a pastor. I did find him in 1880 in West Virginia, Jackson County.
His name is indexed under Murry. Roscoe's obit states he was born in Hereford,
West Virginia. Hereford is in Jackson County. I haven't been able to find him
in the 1900 nor the 1920 census. In 1910 he is in Uniontown, Carrollton County,
Maryland. The wife in 1910 is different from the wife in 1880.
A search of the LDS files, shows a Levi F. Murry born September 27, 1845,
born of a John Murry and Elizabeth Fulkreth in WEstmoreland County,
Pennsylvania. ( I have not searched in the census's for information on this
    lead......yet)

Yesterday i did some digging in census's of the U.S. I found a Sherman E.
Murray living in Washington DC in 1910. He is 21 years old at that point in
time. He is boarding and I can't make out his occupation. It shows he was born
in Weat Virginia and both his parents born in Pennsylvania. (This last matches
information we know from death notices.)
I can't find him in 1920. In 1930 Sherman shows up in the Seattle
Washington census with information matching what I had found in your posted
genealogy. However it shows he was born in Virginia, and shows his parents from
Kansas. Was this a mistake on the census takers part, did Pauline give the
information wrong, or did he? We will never know. I saw that Pauline's father
was also mentioned on that census.
I found it interesting that the Bowlus (Bowles) family came from Frederick
    County, Maryland.
I did do some research on the VanGorder line and have pieced together what i
feel is Arilla Van Gorder's line. I will get it together and pass it on on my
next day off. Most of the informatin was gotten from online, from census's etc.
if you care to start looking yourself in the interim.
I think i have sent you enough of a mish-mash of information. I apologize
as i did work last nite and couldnt sleep with this running thru my head.
I live in Hagerstown Maryland and Frederick is only 20 min away. I go
frequently to the historical society there and also to a genealogy room in their
public library. If you have specific questions on things you would like looked
up feel free to ask and I'll see what i can find out as time permits.
