    BAILEY-TURNBO LETTER

Transcribed by Gloria J. Tune 13 September 2017
from what appears to be a copy from a book, likely the transcription of the original letter by the below mentioned Jill K. Garrett, a well known researcher & author in Maury County, Tennessee. Shared with me by another descendant of James & Elzabeth Bailey's son John Harvey Bailey whose son John Frank Bailey wrote the letter to his brother Claiborne Lee Bailey.

Letter written by Frank Bailey to C. L. Bailey (Clabe Bailey), Hampshire, Tenn. Letter postmarked, Los Angeles, California, 31 August 1935. This letter copied in 1963 by Jill K. Garrett. Letter in possession at that time of Miss Suzanne Bailey, Columbia, Tennessee.

“Grandmother Turnbo's maiden name was Coffey. Grandmother Bailey's maiden name, I don't know. Uncle Nathan was married twice, had one son by first wife and one girl married Dr. Wolf.”

“Our great grandfathers were Revolutionary soldiers. Great grandfather Turnbo was in the battle of Kings Mountain.”

“I forgot to mention that the third girl (of Turnbo's) married a man named Clint Laforty and lived in West Tennessee. I don't know how many children they had. I was at his house once after his wife was dead. I know very little about them. Our ancestors were slave holders on both sides and were agricultural people. I never knew of any criminals among them.”

“We had five relatives in the Civil War (first cousins) Jones and Tune on Father's side - three on mother's side. The 2 Sims boys, and one killed, as above said. James was shot through the leg at the battle of Richmond, Ky., 1862. Uncle Nathan had a son by his first wife, who was in the war. If some of Uncle Andy's children are living they are the only first cousins that we have.”

“James Bailey, Grandfather, was born 24 May 1787, died 12 March 1866. Grandmother, Elizabeth Bailey was born 12 March 1786, died 18 August 1842. To them was born four children, three girls and one son (father). Father was born 18 Nov. 1819, and died 26 February 1868.”

“One of the girls married a Buckner and had one child Henrietta, our first cousin. She married Cates as you know.

“Second girl married an Alsoybrooks. He died leaving her one child (girl). She afterwards married a Beckum and had two children, Jim and Bob Beckum.”

[note by Gloria - we know from marriage records that Mary Bailey married first to Stephen Beckum, then second to Kindon Alsobrook]

[at bottom of this page is the number] -201-

    BAILEY-TURNBO LETTER continued:

“Third girl, AUNT P, married ALEX BECKUM, whom you know. To them was born 5 girls and one boy (LUTHER). ADELINE married a JONES, MARY ELIZA a JONES. JANE married MART McCLAIN. LIZZIE a TUNE, LOONEY'S mother.”

“James Turnbo, grandfather, was born 22 March 1780, died 19 August 1826. Grandmother Felilia was born 13 March 1787, died 18 May 1865. Mother was born 20 March 1824, died 18 August 1899. To them was born seven children - 3 boys, 4 girls.”

“Uncle Nathan and Andy you know. Uncle Claiborne died in middle life. Of Aunt Gracy you know. One girl married a Mathews - two children. One girl Polly married Paris Simms and had six children - 5 boys and one girl. James, Frank, Ned, Paris, and one son killed at battle of Chicamauga. Baileys were from Virginia. Turnbos from North Carolina.”
