The following is a selection in "Hazzard's History of Henry County, Indiana, 1822-1906," Volu me 2, page 1163, by George Hazzard, Published in 1906. It is a secton titled "Biographical Sk etch of Benjamin Franklin Koons." This Benjamin was born in1839 in Henry Co., IN and died th ere in 1911. These were his personal recollections of stories he would have heard from his fa ther, Joseph Koons, and possibly, as a child, from his grandmother Abigail. That his great-gr andfather was Devault Koons was likely passed on accurately. However, the place of origin i n Pennsylvania and the timing do not match documented records. In the following excerpt the f amily moved to North Caroline about 1800, but sons Gasper and George appear on the 1779 Tax L ist for Randolph Co., NC, over 20 years before. Benjamin's early history is part family legen d. Whether his father was from Pennsylvania or Maryland is discussed in the details of Gasper 's father Devault. Here is the story Benjamin told George Hazzard:
"The great-grandparents of Benjamin F. Koon were Devault Koons, a native of Pennsylvania , and Susan (Dicks) Koons, a native of Germany, who lost her first husband at sea while cross ing the ocean to America. She subsequently married Devault Koons, and to their union were bor n three sons - Gasper, George, and John. Gasper, who was born in Pennsylvania, November 8, 17 59, married Mary Presnell, also a native of Pennsylvania, in 1775. They had seven children, f our sons and three daughters, namely: George, Devault, Gasper, John, Martha, Mary, and one wh o died in infancy.
"The mother of these children died, and in 1797 the father, Gasper Koons, married Abigai l Piggott, a school teacher, the daughter of Jeremiah and Rachel Piggott. They were members o f the Friendsí or Quaker Church, and the marriage was according to the Friendís ceremony. T o the union of Gasper Koons and Abigail Piggott were born twelve children, nine sons and thre e daughters. The eldest son died in infancy; the others were: Jeremiah, William, Nathan, Henr y, Samuel, Joseph, Benjamin, Jesse, Hannah, Rachel, and Susannah.
"This family moved about the year 1800, from Pennsylvania to North Carolina, where the y settled near Bald Mountain. In the fall of the year 1808 the family left North Carolina an d after travelling fully for six weeks, climbing mountains and fording streams and rivers, th ey arrived safely at Whitewater, near the then village of Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana, an d there they entered one hundred and sixty acres of land, which now lie beyond the corporat e limits, southeast of the city of Richmond. Gasper Koons and his wife were devout member o f the Friendsí Church and the considerable body of their co-religionists, who were already se ttled in Wayne County about Richmond, made the location an especially favorable one to them . They attended the meetings of their church at Richmond as long as their healths would permi t. Gasper Koons died November 8, 1820 at the age of sixty one years. His widow followed him t o the grave in 1850, age seventy eight years. Both are buried in Earlham Cemetery, Richmond."

One of the best secondary sources for early Koons family history can be found in James W. Hoo k, "George Michael Eller and his Descendents in America," published in 1957, pages 159-162 (o f over 40 pages on the Koons and descendants). He concludes that the above account by Benjami n Franklin Koons that the family came from Pennsylvania is "rendered doubtful" because Devaul t Koons appears repeatedly in the Frederick Co. MD records as well as son Devault Koons, ther e. The sons Gasper, John, and George appear in the same locations in North Carolina as the El ler, Dick, and Stoker famiies where are documented as coming from Frederick County, and the n umber if intermarriages between the families.
