Martin Kuntz's son Peter moved from Menzingen about 20 miles south-west to Durlach near Karls ruhe by the Rhine River. His grandson Michael crossed the Rhine and settled in Preuschdorf, A lsace, France. His great-grandson Hans Georg Cuntz crossed the seas to Philadelphia in 1732 a nd settled in Fredericks Co., Maryland. From there the family moved south to North Carolina a nd then spread to parts west.
Historical note: The 30 Years' War (1618-1648) was initially fought between Protestants and C atholics. George Frederick of Baden-Durlach led the Protestants in a number of battles, but w as defeated in Wimpfen in 1622 and his army destroyed in 1627. Martin was an 'Evangelisch', a nd this may account for his death in that year. It may also have spurred his family's movemen t towards America.
Research Note: My wife Linda, nee Koontz, and I (Ken Doig) researched the early generations o f this family in the early 1990s with recent updates. Some onsite locations include the LDS L ibrary in Salt Lake City and the libraries of the Southern California Genealogical Society an d German Genealogical Society. The christening records were extracted by myself from the orig inal church records (microfilm) of Preuschdorf, Alsace and Frederick County, Maryland. Two pu blications by earlier reserach are "Hazzard's History of Henry County, Indiana, 1822-1906," b y George Hazzard, Published in 1906, and "George Michael Eller and his Descendents in America ," , by James W. Hook, published in 1957. Additions and corrections always welcome.
