    George Washington Rogers

    (1829-1912)

    According to his father's will, George was to remain under his brother Elijah's care unti l age 21. They came from Ripley Co., IN to Rock Island Co., IL soon after their father's deat h in about 1840.

    In 1850 George Rogers, age 23 from IN, was a laborer in Union Township, J ackson Co., IA (census page 344) on the farm of Joseph Chittenden and family; Jackson Co. i n Iowa is across the river from IL.

    Note: George's first child William Monroe Rogers was born in 1853 before he married Mahal a Hammond in 1854. William's death record reports his mother as Hail Daniels.

    In 1860 George, 31 from IN, was a farm laborer in Edgington Township, Rock Island Co., I L (page 341); the value of his personal property was $200. At home were Mahala, 27 from IN, W m., 5 from IL, Andrew, 3 from IL, George W. Jr., 2 from IL, and Delos, a boy 6/12 from IL. Th ey lived next door to Mahala's Father.

    George joined the 126th Illinois Infantry, Company B, on 11 Aug 1862 at Buffalo Prairie, R ock Island Co. He was mustered in on 4 Sept 1862. He attained the rank of Sergeant. He was mu stered out on 12 July 1865.
    126th Regiment Infantry - Organized at Alton, I11., and muste red in September 4. 1862. Moved to Columbus. Ky., thence to Bolivar and LaGrange. Tenn., Nove mber 20-28, 1862. Attached to District of Jackson, 13th Army Corps (Old), Department of the T ennessee, to December, 1862. 3rd Brigade, District of Jackson, 16th Army Corps, to March, 186 2. 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, 16th Army Corps, to May, 1863. 2nd Brigade, Kimball's Provision al Division, 16th Army Corps, to July, 1863. 2nd Brigade, Kimball's Division, District of Eas tern Arkansas, to August, 1863. 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, Arkansas Expedition, to January, 1 864. 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 7th Army Corps, Dept. of the Arkansas, to March, 1864. 3rd Br igade, 3rd Division, 7th Army Corps, to February, 1865. Unattached, 7th Army Corps, mouth o f White River, Ark., to July, 1865.

    SERVICE.--Duty at LaGrange, Tenn., until January, 1863. (6 Companies moved to Jackson, Te nn., December 19, 1862; thence moved to Humboldt, Tenn. R.R. crossing at Fork Deer River Dece mber 20. Action at Humboldt December 21.) 4 Companies on duty at Jackson, Tenn., and 6 Compan ies at Humboldt, Tenn., January to March 25; then at Jackson until May 25, 1863. Moved to Vic ksburg, Miss., May 25-28. Siege of Vicksburg May 28-July 4. Moved to Helena. Ark., July 24. E xpedition against Little Rock, Ark., August 1-September 10. Bayou Fourche and capture of Litt le Rock September 10. Moved to Duvall's Bluff October 24, and duty there until August 19, 186 4. Action at Clinton June 25-26. Moved to Pine Bluff, Ark., August 19, and duty there until F ebruary 12, 1865.  Scouts from Pine Bluff toward Camden and Monticello January 26-31. A t mouth of White River, Ark., until June 12, and at Pine Bluff until July 12. Mustered out Ju ly 12, 1865. Regiment lost during service 6 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 4 Of ficers and 192 Enlisted men by disease. Total 202.

    On 31 Oct 1866 George purchased 40 acres at $11.50/acre, lot 2SESE of Section 27, townshi p 16N, range 4W of meridian 4 in Rock Island Co., IL.

    George, his wife and 8 children lef t Illinois in 1870 and travelled to Kansas in two covered wagons drawn by ox teams. They firs t settled in Washington Co., moving to Smith Co. in 1875. They moved to Ash Rock Township, Ro oks Co., KS in 1878.

    George and his wife Mahalla were two of the thirteen founding member of the Ash Rock Churc h in Ash Rock Township, Rooks Co., KS on 25 Mar 1878, George becoming a Trustee of the church . On 20 Sept 1878 he purchased the NW 1/4 of 3-6-16 in Ash Rock Township. On 31 Oct 1882 he p urchased the NE 1/4 of 3-6-16.

    In 1900 George farmed in Ash Rock Township, Rooks Co., KS (page 161) with his wife Mahal a and son Leander; he reported that he could not read or write. George lived the last two yea rs of his life in Colorado, having returned to Kansas for a visit when he died.
