The war erupted soon after Black Hawk and a group of S auks, Meskwakis, and Kickapoos known as the "British Band" crossed the Mississippi River int o the U.S. state of Illinois in April 1832. Black Hawk's motives were ambiguous, but he was a pparently hoping to avoid bloodshed while resettling on land that had been ceded to the Unite d States in a disputed 1804 treaty. Freeman also assisted in burying the dead.

Freeman acquired 40 acres of land through the Shawneetown Land Office in Jefferson Co., IL o n 10 Oct 1840. He acquired 40 acres of land through the Kaskaskia Land Office in Washington C o., IL on 1 Jan 1849. He acquired a further 40 acres on 31 Jan 1855 in IL.
