  • ID: I11392
  • Name: John HASWELL
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 1808 in Islington, Middlesex, England
  • Death: 1879
  • Note:
John Haswell was born in Islington, Middlesex, England in 1808. He was arrested in 1827 for stealing a watch and found guilty at the Old Bailey, Middlesex court on tne 31 May 1827 and was sentenced to life. He was sent to Australia on the ship "Florentia" arriving in January, 1828 and was assigned to William Everingham at Sackville near Windsorm NSW. There he met Sarah Ward on a neighbouring property and formed an alliance in 1832.

He and Sarah applied for Banns of Marriage on the 16th July 1832 at Wilberforce, however his name was spelt incorrectly by the minister Rev MD Meares as John Aswell (probably because in his speach John dropped the "H") so the permission was refused as there was no such name on the Muster.

On the 31st August, 1832 they reapplied and submitted a letter from Sarahas father, Michael, giving her permission as she was only 16 years old. The consent of John Haswell's master, William Everingham, was also forwarded with the application. The second application was submitted at Pitt Town near Windsor, NSW.

Permission for this marriage was again refused by the authorities on the 27th Sept 1832 on the grounds "That Sarah was un-employed (only living at home with her parents) and John was not even in receipt of a wage (he was not yet entitled to a "Ticket of Leave") with no income, how were they going to support themselves? (there was no way they possibly could)... so the marriage was refused"

(From information and documents held by the Archives office of NSW Ref No: 4/2151 accessed on 16 Feb 1991 by F. King. GGGrandson of John Haswell.)

On the 16th May 1833 Frederick Wordsworth Ward was born, the year 1833 is in aggreement with his daughter's birth certificate in 1861, which shows Frederick as being 28 years old. This makes it impossible for him to be the son of Sophia Ward as she had a daughter born in April 1833, making it impossible for Frederick to be her child. The Haswell family have always believed he was the son of their GGGrandfather, John Haswell and Sarah Ann Ward.

The date of birth certainly fits in with their decision to marry and subsequent events in Frederick Ward and Sarah Ann Ward points to this relationship even though Frederick Ward was reared by Sarah's parents, Michael and Sophia Ward.
