Petie (Thelma) worked many years for the railroad. She was a teletype operator and worked in different stations around Kansas and for a time at Dalhart, Texas. If she received a message for a train that wasn't going to stop at her station, she would tie the message in string and slip it into a 'Y' shaped pole. She then stood very close to the tracks and held the pole up so the engineer could slip his arm through the string to get the message. As a little girl, I thought it was very scary.
