      Mary Baier wrote the following:

      William Reid is father Jacob Reid, William had to sign for Jacob to marry because he was under age.


      Note different spellings of name Staton and Reede - yet this is how it appears in the document - William Staton wrote the consent in his own hand I have a copy of the original doc.

      Shortly a marrage is to be solemnized between Jacob Reede and my daughter Elizabeth Staton is to certify you that I give my consent to the said marriage given under my hand this 29th day of may 1792.

      Know all men by these presence that we Jacob Reede and John Ballew are held and firmly bound unto Henry Lee (?) Esquire Govenor of the commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of fifty pounds current money to be paid to the said Lee Esquire Governor as aforesaid or to his successors for the use of the said commonwealth which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves jointly and severally our joint and several heirs firmly be these presents sealed with our seals and dates this thirtieth day of May 1792.

      The condition of the above obligation is such that where as there is a marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound Jacob Reid bachelor and Elizabeth Staton spinster both of Amherst County.

      If there be no lawful caus to obstruct the said marriage then the above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.
