Lucy Ann (Brayton) Brown died of childbirth fever approximately 1 week after Merrill's birth. Mary Jane (Brayton) Andrews (Lucy Ann's sister) was a widow with grown children at the time of Lucy's death. Mary Jane attended Lucy at Merrill's birth. Mary Jane married B. F. Brown in 1882 and helped raise Lucy's and Benjamin's children. They did not have children of their own. Mary Jane, Benjamin and the 6 children moved to Barnston Nebraska where B. F. was active in politics (elected 1st supervisor). He owned a livery stable in Barnston and a hardware/implement store in Fairburg, NE. He was elected the first county clerk of Perkins Co., NE but died from a stroke while making his acceptance speech (1888). His body was brought back to Logan, Iowa and buried next to his wife Lucinda Ann (Coleman). The children were placed in a Lutheran orphange until Mary Jane returned to Minburn, Iowa. Mary Jane then raised Merrill until he finished 8th grade.
