American genealogical-Biographical index (AGBI) lists a Joseph Collier, birthdate 1749 in Pennsylvania, as member of the historical regiment of officers of the Continental army [Source: by Francis Bernard Heitman,Washington, D.C. 1914. (685 pg.):165]; and another Joseph Collier born 175? in Pennsylvania as "Heads of Fams. at the first U.S. census, PA"--by the U.S. Bureau of the Census (Washington, 1908: 28 Ten 'Series' of 'Pennsylvania Archives')- (Needs confirmation if this is same Joseph Collier, because we know he was born in VA, not PA, but could be recording error).
Revolutionary War Officers, alphabetical list of officers of the Continental Army C, 15th VA, shows Joseph Collier enlisted as an ensign in the PA state regiment in March, 1777; later a 2nd Lt by 4/18/1777. The regiment was designated the 13th PA on 11/12/1777, and Lt. Joseph Collier was transferred to the 1st PA on 7/1/1778; promoted to 1st Lt. on 5/17/1779; he served until 6/1783, when he was discharged, at which time he had been promoted to Captain.
[Source: Abridged compendium, Frederick Virkus, pg. 246, and Revolutionary War records of VA, section IV]-indicate that Joseph Collier was a 1st Lt. in the Virginia militia, Charlotte Co., VA during the American Revolution, and fought at Gloster town at the time of Cornwallis' surrender, was at the battle of Monmouth and the siege of Yorktown.
After marrying Amy(Amey) Mosley (b. Apr. 13, 1757 in Charlotte Co.,VA)on Dec. 15, 1772 in either Randolph Co. NC or Charlotte Co., VA (records indicate he may have had two wives, Amy Mosley, and Miss Hiliary ?), Joseph and Amy (or Hiliary) Collier moved to and settled in South Carolina abt. 1790.
Altogether Joseph Collier fathered numerous (17-20) children (which children with which wife is unconfirmed): (1)Meredith,b. in 1782 in NC, but of Georgia in later life; (2)Hillary Mosley Collier was b. 1783 in Randolph Co., NC or Edgefield Co., SC (she later m#1 to Frances Quarles in 1806, and possibly a second marriage to a ? Collier,a cousin, and had 9 children altogether: James S.; Eliza Ann; Martha; John; Amy Moseley; Frances; Mary Ann; Emily; and Caroline Collier all b. 1810 to 1828 in SC, but later records indicate she was "of Georgia").

Revolutionary War Officers alphabetical list of Officers of the Continental Army - C - 15th Virginia, pg. 165 source indicates that Joseph died on 28th September, 1790 (so could poss. be wrong date or wrong Joseph Collier).
