  • Note:
Ann or Anna Eliza Norsteand was a pretty, dark haired, blue eyed girl born 11 February 1861 in Chanhaussen, Minnesota to Laura Maude Meade and George Norstrand. In doing research, we found the following in the Census Record for 1865. We believe this is her family.

Census Record - inhabitants of Chanhaussen, Carver County 1st day of March 1865 - No. 162:

    George Norstrand - male
    Laura Norstrand - female
    Anna Norstrand - female
    Anna Norstrand - female
    Joseph Norstrand - male

Many of the census records give a more complete bit of information about each family.

Anna had a good education, possibly even better than her husband. She was talented musically and had learned to play the organ and mandolin and had a beautiful singing voice. In the rigors of pioneer life, there was not much leisure time and she never had much time for music.

She must have had a very difficult life, for moving from one place to another as the Blair family did was not easy. To do the cooking and cleaning for a husband and nine children is never ending task. Homes in those days did not have running water. Often times, it had to be carried great distances. Washing was done with a tub and wash board and light was provided by candles or kerosene lamps. There was always a "privy" out back.

Anna developed "Milk Leg" and for many years had running sores on her leg. It caused her knee to become enlarged and her leg crooked. She walked with a cane and in later years was confined to a wheelchair. Oleva Dewell's only memory of her grandmother is seeing her sweep the floor while in her wheelchair.

Anna kept house under the most difficult of situations and helped with the farm work and chores especially when her husband was busy with carpentering. She had a bad eye which was caused when a June grass or something similar got in it while she was helping haul hay.

Anna died in Sterling, Idaho on 20 March 1920 at the age of 59 years.
