  • ID: I081
  • Name: Levisa "Vicy" Ferrell (alias Thacker)
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: 10 JUN 1835 in VA or KY
  • Death: BET. 1918 - 24 AUG 1921 in Lebern, (Knott Co.), KY
  • Note:
Levisa "Vicy" Thacker was one of several of Nancy Cook's daughters who assumed the surname of their step-father Jesse P. Thacker. Vicy's mother was Nancy (Cook) Dyals-Thacker. Vicy's half-sisters Sarah Mahala and Elizabeth "Betsy" and possibly her half brother Andrew were the children of an unidentified man with the surname Dyals, which means Vicy was neither a Dyals/Diles/Dials or a Thacker, instead she was a Ferrell. As mentioned, she was the daughter of William C. Ferrell, Jr. who became involved with Nancy Cook while Jesse P. Thacker was in prison. Vicy also had children born out of wed-lock and gave her children their step-grandfather's Thacker surname as well. Apparently, this "practice" of having children born out of wed-lock was quite common in this family because Vicy's sisters Betsy and Sarah also had children born out of wedlock. Even though she was not married, Levisa had many children by Dr. Jasper Byrd Stewart. Even though Vicy gave her children her step-father's Thacker surname, some of them eventually changed their surname to Stewart, thus accurately reflecting their true blood-line. For example, according to the poem "Trail of Tears", Leonard Stewart, who was the author of the poem and the grandson of Vicy and Dr. Jasper Byrd Stewart, stated he went to court while Vicy and Jasper were still alive to have the court officially recognize his surname at Stewart. Leonard was the son of Robert Thacker-Stewart and Lucinda Pigman. In conclusion, Vicy was neither a Dyals/Diles/Dials nor a Thacker. Instead she was a Ferrell, but her children used the Thacker surname, which was suppose to be Stewart.

One interesting thing to note is that the community in which this family lived was evidently quite liberal when it came to "traditional" family values and was very tolerant of the nonconventional relationship between Dr. Stewart and his mistress Vicy since Vicy had children with a married man who was a doctor and a very prominent member of the community, yet it was well-known that Dr. Stewart was already married and had a family with his wife Nancy (Mullins). The standards of this community must have been quite relaxed considering Dr. Stewart raised two seperate families at the same time, one with his mistress Vicy and the other with his wife Nancy, yet both families remained very close and apparently were not as exposed to a level of stigma that may have otherwise been imposed on this family as a result of this nonconventional relationship. In fact, these families were so close that Jasper's wife Nancy (Mullins) Stewart was a midwife and helped to deliver Vicy's children.

According to Vicy's headstone, she died Mon. 20 May 1918 and is buried in the Dyer Cemetery behind Congressman Carl D. Perkins' home. Congressman Perkins married Vicy's great-granddaughter Verna Johnson. According to the death certificate filed with the Commonwealth of Kentucky vital records, she died Aug 24, 1921 and was 86 yrs old at the time of her death and was buried at Dyer Cemetery. Also, this death certificate shows her parents were John Thacker and Sarah Turner, which appears to be an error because according to family tradition she was born when her step father Jesse P. Thacker was in prison and her mother Nancy Cook became involved with William C. Ferrell, Jr.
