  • ID: I1228
  • Name: Ezekiel DANIEL
  • Given Name: Ezekiel
  • Surname: Daniel
  • Suffix: Sr., RS (NC-SC) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: Aug 1765 in Halifax County, North Carolina 1 2 3 4 5

  • Residence: 1767
  • Note: Ezekiel was the son of John Daniel who moved with his family about 1767 from Halifax County, North Carolina to what was then the Cheraws District of South Carolina, to a section later known as Marlboro District. 8
  • Event: Military Service 1780-1782 South Carolina
  • Note:
Ezekiel volunteered three times to serve in the Revolutionary War and served three months in 1780 (with Captain Murphy against the Tories in Marlboro District); one month in the latter half of 1781 (with Captain Standard's Company, which was under Francis Marion near Moncks Corner at Watbo); and two months in 1782 (at Georgetown).

Ezekiel was living in Marion District, South Carolina, in 1832 when he applied for a pension based on this Revolutionary War service. His references included Hugh Godbolt (clergyman), Archibald Kerby, and Nathaniel Whittington. Ezekiel received a pension of $20 per year.

Ezekiel Daniel along with Archibald Kerby, Nathaniel Whittington and others were mentioned in the petition of John Rogers of Marion County, South Carolina (File S11330) as soldiers who served under his command.

  • Residence: 1786-1842 South Carolina
  • Note: At age 21, Ezekiel moved from his father's home to the Darlington District, South Carolina, where he lived six or seven years. He then moved to Marion District, and he was still living there in 1832 when he applied for a pension.
  • Event: Census Report Census/Tax 1790 Cheraws District, South Carolina
  • Note:
The 1790 Cheraws District census does not include Ezekiel Daniel by name, which can mean either:

    (1) he was not there,
    (2) he was missed, or
    (3) he was residing in a household of which someone else was enumerated as head.

There was a John Daniel enumerated as a head of household in St. Thomas township, Cheraw's District; 1 male 16 & up, 2 males under 16, and 1 female 16 & up. This might have been Ezekiel's family and would mesh with his statements on his Revolutionary War pension application.

  • Event: Military Pension 1832
  • Note:
According to his deposition given in support of his request for a pension, Ezekiel Daniel, Sr., said that he was born in Halifax County, North Carolina, in August of 1765, but his father, clearly named as John Daniel, moved the family to Cheraws District, South Carolina in about 1767. About two years before the end of the Revolution, he joined a South Carolina volunteer unit led by a Captain Murphy in the Marlboro District, SC in an expedition against the Tories. He served with Captain Murphy for more than three months. Some time later, he was drafted by the Marlboro District Militia for a period of one month, during which he served under a Captain Standard in a regiment commanded by a Colonel Benton. And then for a period of 6 months. All his service was in South Carolina.

Also according to his pension application,Ezekiel stated that he lived with his father until his 21st year (about 1787) and that he then went out on his own. He said that after the war he moved to the Darlington District and lived there for about 6 or 7 years before settling in Marion County.

Based on his application, he was awarded an annual allowance of $20.00 beginning Aug 7, 1833, when Ezekiel, Sr., was 69 years of age. He was listed on the 1840 Marion District, South Carolina, Census as a Revolutionary War pensioner, age 76.

  • Event: Census Report Census/Tax 1840 Marion County, South Carolina
  • Note:
In 1840 Ezekiel Daniel, age 76, was shown as residing in a household headed by Mary Meggs, who was presumably one of his daughters. [The 1850 census of Marion County, SC (page 81, household #1220) gives her age as 50, place of birth Marion County.]

Ezekiel was listed on page 176 under the column headed "Pensioners for Revolutionary or Military Service...."
