  • ID: I1103
  • Name: John HOOE
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 14 OCT 1793 in "Mayfield," Prince William County, Virginia
  • Death: 8 JUN 1873 in "Mayfield," Prince William County, Virginia
  • Burial: Mayfield Cemetery, Manassas, Prince William County, Virginia 1
  • Note:

"Mayfield" was once a part of "Buckhall," which came into the family when Howson Hooe, Sr., married Anne Frances Harris in 1724. "Mayfield" was situated near Manassas Station, Prince William County. John Hooe lived quietly with his large family at Mayfield until the Civil War began. He was 68 years old, and became "a refugee to Cumberland County,Virginia, to get his daughters out of Yankee lines." He remained in Cumberland County for two years and then returned home. The house at Mayfield was said to be of "solid stone construction. . .the interior was burned out by the Yankees." John Hooe rebuilt the house. He is sometimes referred to as "John Hooe of Mayfield."

Ms. Meeks lists his ten children as "Sarah Elizabeth, known to the family as Sallie, Fanny, Robert, Peter, Susan, Blucher, Rice, Jane, Virginia John, and Howson.

"Mayfield" was built on land on two branches of Bull Run Creek near the present town of Manassas. The land was inherited from Howson Hooe, Sr., and his wife, Anne Frances Harris. The land was part of the land grant that Nathaniel Harris willed to his daughter, Anne Frances. The burying ground is northeast of where the house once stood. Hooes were buried there as late as 1900. The stone walls of the house were still standing until the 1930s. All that is left of the house today is a plaque. A subdivision was built in 1996 where the house once stood.

"Descendants of Rice Hooe" gives John's place of burial as Mayfield Cemetery or Hooe Family (Hazel Plain) Cemetery.
