  • ID: I27293
  • Name: William Harlan (Capt)
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: ABT 1594 in England
  • Death: ABT 1651 in England
  • Note:
From Brad Parks <bparks@erols.com>--quoted from Alpheus Harlan from papers furnished by William L. Vosler, of Butler County, PA, "Captain Richard's father (and also that of Captain William Harland) was John Harland; John Harland's father was Robert Harland; and Robert Harland's father was Henry Harland, who Will bears the date of 1580." Others have questioned Vosler's statement as "improbable, especially since, in a time when it was largely the custon to retain given names in the family, we find so few Richards, Henrys, or Roberts named in the earlier generations." Brad Parks comments, "It is a possibility, however, that since Captain William Harland was a supporter of the Puritan, Oliver Cromwell, his descendants used religiously conntected names for their children rather than the names of British Empire Kings - such as Henry, Richard, etc."

Capt William was a Naval Officer under the command of Admiral Sir William Penn, father of William Penn the Quaker. Will proved 29 July 1651
