Enlistment paper shows Michael Cushen, labourer, from the parish of Pendergast near Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire aged 18 years 0 months. He was 5'7", fresh complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair. Enlistment medical was on 2 January 1861, although it turned out he was a deserter from the Pembrokeshire Militia. The date would mean he was born in 1843 which agrees with death certificate.
Seems to have enlisted at Dudley?? or Worcester? had to sign with an X

Later records show "he was attested to the Royal Pembroke Militia on 27 December 1859"

Emily's marriage certificate gives this as 'retired sergeant'.

Children: Ltr from sols (Reed, Graham & Little, Penrith) dated 27 March 1963 to my mother Gloria states "we enclose... in respect of your Great Uncle's estate.." re Charles John Cushen (deceased). He was therefore Emily Florence's brother and Michael's son.

Charles John Cushen died 29 January 1962. Details of estate shows bequests to the children of two siblings (both deceased) Emily Florence Walker and Mabel Wedge: hers were Dorothy Emily Street and Lucy Mabel Walker (no relation as far as I know).
