Deceased Name: Lenore Grace, 102; began teaching in 1904
Lenore G. Grace, 102, a retired teacher, taught from 1904 through 1971
in schools in Iowa and Illinois. She was a daughter of a Civil War
veteran, Garrett Cushing.
A longtime resident of Wheaton, she died Sunday in Villa Franciscan in
Joliet.
Her father used his mustering-out pay from the Army to help pay for a
small home in Braidwood, Ill., where he became a miner and a farmer.
"She and her brothers and sisters worked very hard and walked
everywhere to get an education," her niece Cathleen Henry said. "She was strong of character. Each of her three sisters got master's degrees, as she did. She took her studying with her everywhere to be able to do that."
Mrs. Grace began teaching at the age of 15 in Momence, Ill., after
taking a course in teaching at Normal College (now Northern Illinois
University) in De Kalb. She also taught in Rathbun, Iowa, where she started in a one-room school. She served in Illinois schools in Elwood, Rockport and Rockdale. Her last teaching job was at St. Michael's Catholic School in Wheaton. She was 82 when she retired.
She taught all grades, including some high school students, in her
first assignments.There are no immediate survivors.
Mass for Mrs. Grace will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Michael
Catholic Church, 315 W. Illinois St., Wheaton
