  • ID: I513007314
  • Name: Lucius Cushing
  • Given Name: Lucius
  • Surname: Cushing
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 1809 in Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland
  • Death: 5 Mar 1865 in Covington, Pennsylvania
  • Burial: Mar 1865 St Andrews Cemetery, Blossburg, Tioga, Pennsylvania
  • Note:
The 1880 US Census for Clermont PA shows the birthplace of the mother and father of Ella Cushing Keating, (Margaret's daughter) to have been Ireland

(The following information comes from the obituary of Lucius's wife in 1885)

Margaret Finnell was born in County Clare, Ireland, and in the year 1831 was married in Kilrush, Ireland, to Mr Lucius Cushing, of that place. Her husband in the year 1840 left Ireland for America, and was shipwrecked on the voyage, and rescued by a ships crew which was destined for Quebec, whither Mr. Cushing arrived and from thence came to Towanda, Bradford County, Pa.
[Note: Family lore (via Vincent Trainor's mother) has it that they were at the point of having each other for "lunch" when rescued.]
[Note: I believe he may actually have emigrated in 1842 not 1840]
In about two years thereafter Mr. Cushing sent for his wife and family, one of the children being drowned in the harbor at Quebec.
[Note: this apparently was James who died June 3, 1844]

After his family arrived in Bradford County, Mr Cushing resided at Troy and from thence in the year 1845 removed to Blossburg, engaging in the business of butchering and prospecting for coal. He discovered the vein of coal known as the Cushing or Seymour vein, the latter name being preferred by Mr. Cushing in honor of his friend the Hon. Horatio Seymour. Mr Cushing meeting with reverses purchased a tract of "wild land" in the township of Ward, directly north of the mining town of Morris Run, where he resided up to the time of his death, which occurred March 6, 1865, aged 71 years.
[Note: Family Bible says he died March 1st (or possibly 5th) 1865, aged 61 - another family record says he was born in 1809 which would have made him only about 56 in 1865 - if the Bible is correct he would have been born about 1804, if the obituary is correct he would have been born about 1794 ?? - St Andrews cemetery listing says died 1865 aged 65]

additional information from the history of Blossburg Borough in Tioga County (1883) about Horatio Seymour :

St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church.--St. Andrew's congregation was organized in 1841, and then consisted of twenty members. They held their first services in one of the public halls. Rev. John O'Reilly, of St. Joseph's, Susquehanna county, Pa., was appointed by Bishop Kendrick of Philadelphia to attend Blossburg and other missions. A circuit of sixty miles was his ordinary field of duty, and this zealous priest frequently encountered opposition and ill treatment. This state of things was son changed by his pious works, winning eloquence and exalted virtues. Liberal donations were made toward building a church by Mr. Calket, of Philadelphia, and Hon. Horatio Seymour, of Utica, N.Y. The foundation trenches were dug by Patrick Bannon, James Mooney, Thomas Dissing and Simon Golden, on the 9th of October 1850. In January 1851 the corner stone was laid by Bishop Kendrick. Rev. F. Ahern at that time has pastoral charge of the mission. The contract for building the church was awarded to John L. Evans, of Blossburg. It was a plain wooden edifice, 50 by 30.

James Kendrick will open a coal mine on lands of Michael Gibson soon. The vein is what is called the Cushing vein.

[Note: this may have been the Michael Gibson who married Annie Cushing]

1860 US Census, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, page 137, dwelling #1060, family #1060, enumerated July 25, 1860 ancestry.com image Sullivan-1 pg 1 of 1, stamped sheet 194 - Post Office Cherry Flats.

James, age 4, born in PA

(The 1860 census transcription on the Tri-Counties site shows Lucius as age 50, it definitely looks more like 52 to me)
There are major discrepancies between the ages of the parents from 1850 to 1860 - from the 1850 ages Lucius should have been 57 in 1860 and Margaret 50 in 1860 ?? The older children's ages are closer ,but if Michael was 12 in 1860 he should have been listed in the 1850 census at age 2, but his actual birthdate as given in the family Bible, would make him be 9-1/2 in 1860, and Ellen should have only been 6-1/2 and James should be 5. If the information was supplied by one of the parents they seem to have had only a vague idea of their children's ages. ?

The 1850 census also lists another "Cushion" family - this might possibly be the John Cushing referred to in the Family Bible as emigrating in 1844 ?? This could have been a younger brother of Lucius or some other relation. ?? Or they may be completely unrelated.

    1850 US Census, Bloss Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania,dwelling #138 , family #143, sheet # 10-A , enumerated October 4th, 1850, ancestry.com image #19 of 21
John Cushion, age 45, born in Ireland, occ: laborer
Hannah Cushion, age 55, born in Ireland, can not read or write
Mary Cushion, age 20, born in Ireland
Anna Cushion, age 12, born in Ireland, attended school within the year

The 1860 census lists the following in Bloss Twp (image 15 of 22) - might possibly be the same man as the above with date errors
    or a totally different man.
John Cushing age 60, occ: Gardener, born in Ireland
with wife Harriet, age 66?, born in Ireland

This is probably the man who is buried in the oldest Blossburg cemetery as John Cushing, died 1863 aged 63.
There is no other Cushing (or Cushion) buried in that cemetery.

The following list is part of the Tioga County Cemetery Inscriptions - Volume 1. Cemetery read and published 1970s.

This 1970s listing is badly outdated. A new listing is needed. Please consider volunteering.
