  • Note:
Randolph Langdon Cushing started in the lumber business with Cushing Brothers at Edmonton in 1907. In 1918 he commenced his own business in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan under the name of R.L.Cushing Millwork Company Limited. In 1926 he amalgamated R.L.Cushing Millwork of Moose Jaw with A.B.Cushing Mills of Calgary and A .B.Cushing Mills, Vancouver and was President thereof. In 1944 he became President and General Manager of A.B.Cushing Mills, Calgary; R.L.Cushing Millwork, Moose Jaw and Cushing Mills Limited.

He was not that mechanically inclined, but hired people who were. For example, he was given a company car for his birthday and drove it proudly for over a week. But one morning his son, Don, saw him walking to the office and inquired about his car. "It quit!", he quipped. After driving him to work, Don retrieved the motor vehicle and found that the only problem was that it was out of gas! Then Donald gave his Dad a brand new electric shaver for Christmas. Again he used it proudly for over a week. Then he came to work sporting a five-o'clock shaddow. Don asked why he forgot to shave. Dolph replied, "It quit!" When his son checked the shaver at home, the only problem it had was that Dolph had forgotten to clean it, so it was all plugged up.

In his later years, he never retired but continued to work at his desk, where he died. He and his wife spent many winters in Hawaii. On one occaision while flying out of San Francisco to Honolulu, he suffered a heart attack. As the flight was only about an hour from San Francisco the pilot opted to return immediately, which undoubtedly spared his life. He was affectionately known to all as "Dolph".

"Flora McHardy had known the family when she spent summer holidays in Kenilworth. The west was calling for teachers. In 1910 she answered the call, and was assigned to a rural school outside of Regina. Just how the son of George, Randolph L. Cushing, learned of her arrival Flora is not sure, but he lost no time in driving horse and buggy to the school and fetching her to his parents home in Regina for weekends. Here Randolph's uncle appointed him sales manager of the Moose Jaw plant, and there the bride and groom took up residence, living there and later Vancouver for some 30 years and in 1935 or 1942 came to Calgary, with their son Donald, and daughter, Catherine."

Dolph was a member of the Wesley United Church, the Canadian Manufacturers Association and the Calgary Rotary Club.
