  • Note:
    John moved to Newburyport in 1802, and lived there until his death. At the time of his death he was a ship-master and the largest ship owner and merchant in the State.

    John was a Captain in the War of 1812. In 1818 he purchased the brick house at the corner of Fruit and High Streets at Newburyport up hill from the wharf where Cushing ships would put out to sea for the remainder of that century. Three generations of the family spanned the rise and decline of Newburyport's prosperous shipping era, distinguishing themselves on land as well as at sea.
