  • Name: Matthew Cushing
  • Given Name: Matthew
  • Surname: Cushing
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 29 Jul 1730 in Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts
  • Death: 1 Dec 1813 in Putney, Windham, Vermont
  • Change Date: 5 Nov 2002
  • Note:
Matthew lived in Rehoboth and afterwards in the State of Vermont. The family of Matthew and Abigail (Titus) Cushing moved from Rehoboth, Massachusetts to Vermont sometime between 1761 and 1764 (between the births of the second Molly and Benjamin). Matthew fought in the Revolution as a private in Captain James Clay's Company, Col. Bradley's Regiment, Vermont line. The 1810 census of Putney, Windham, Vermont lists Matthew Cushing and one female, both over age 45. There isno way to know from this if the female is definitely Abigail Titus, but I have not seen any records which would indicate otherwise.

The Cushing genealogy lists Matthew as having married 1st Priscilla Smith. Rehoboth Vital Records list birth of Matthew Cushing on 1 October 1750, son of Matthew Cushing and 'Prescilla' Smith and includes the comment "reputed". Since all other records list father and mother with the same last name, could Matthew Jr. have been illegitimate? No marriage record listed for Matthew Cushing and Priscilla Smith in Rehoboth Vital Records, though there is for Matthew and Abigail Titus.
