Seth went to Middlebury some time before 1820, and was engaged as a teacher of the languages and higher mathematics, in Middlebury Academy, in which calling he continued until his death. In consideration ofhis long and valuable services, the Trustees adopted a resolution that his children should be educated at the Academy free of expense. He was very methodicalin all his habits, and was highly respected by all in the community, and by hundreds of students. He was the first classical teacher in Middlebury Academy, which was erected in 1817, and which was the first academy founded west of the Genesee River. It was patronized by the best families in Western New York, and many of its students afterwards attained fame and fortune. The substantial brickbuilding is still standing and is used as a High School as of 1905.
