In 1332 the future Lord Mauley was granted a huge portion of his father's estate comprising no less than sixty knights' fees spread throughout Yorkshire. Typically, military service formed a small but important dimension of Mauley's life. Peter (V)'s early experience in Scotland with his father doubtless proved useful at the battle of Nevilles Cross in 1346, and perhaps in Edward III's French campaign of the same year where he may also have served. However, a significant portion of Mauley's time was spent tending to domestic affairs, and in this respect he found a formidable wife in Margaret (d. 1382), daughter of Robert Clifford, first Lord Clifford (d. 1314).
