Allan Stevenson was born on 11 September 1849 at Lady Yard Farm, Tarbolton, Ayrshire, the son of John Stevenson and Mary Ritchie Strawhorn. Nothing is yet known of his training, but he commenced practice in Ayr prior to 1876, and c. 1885 he was briefly in partnership with ____ Kair as Stevenson & Kair.

In 1885 Thomas McGill Cassels, born in 1869, was articled to Stevenson, attending classes at Ayr Academy. In 1890 he moved to the office of civil engineer Charles C Lindsay in Glasgow, leaving in the following year to become principal assistant to Peter Macgregor Chalmers, and studying at Glasgow School of Art and the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College throughout this period. He returned to Allan Stevenson's office in 1895 as managing assistant. It is not clear when he first became a partner, but he was still managing assistant at the time of his admittance as LRIBA in the mass intake of 20 July 1911. The practice did not become Allan Stevenson & Cassels until c. 1923, an event which probably marked Stevenson's death or retirement at what must have been a fairly advanced age. Cassels continued to use Stevenson's name in the practice's title thereafter. In later years the practice was taken over by Duncan McCulloch and subsequently by E A Darley, who formed the Darley Hay partnership; the Darley Hay archive was transferred to Ayrshire Archives in 2007 after the Darley Hay firm merged with Carricks to become Carricks Darley Hay.

Stevenson married to Mary Jane Campbell McIlwraith about 1877 and they had at least 5 children. He died in about 1929.
