The information presented within this database may contain errors. I have citations of where I got everything, but I am still in the process of verifying the information through certificates, censuses, etc. Since I have had some of this information longer than I have been doing the backup research (eager beginner mistakes), I don’t have backup sources on all the people in my database. I do upload my gedcoms with all the source information for each person so scroll to the bottom.

Michael Bishop , 6 May 2001: Notes for you on Capt. John of Virginia:
John Bishop (Capt.) was born in 1590 in Linlithgowshire, Scotland. Was the son of William Bishop. His Uncle David Bishop was the Burgess of Edinburgh, Scotland appointed by King James the VI (thence known as King James I) after the death of Queen Elizabeth. James became king of both Scotland and England hence the formation of the United Kingdom.

      Ref. Facts.
Privy council records of King James
Privy council record of King Charles
Merchant shipping of the 17th century (shipping records for the Golden Lion) (port of Greenock, Scotland, tobacco from (Virginia to, by King Charles)
David Pebbles (Merchant in Edinburg, Scotland) sent to Virginia on charges by Cromwell, Council.
      The English Civil War archives
The History and Archives of West, Lothioan District, Scotland
The History of Cultree Estate, Linlithgowshire, Scotland (Thomas Bishop)
The History of the Port of Grennock, Scotland and the tobacco trade in Virginia.
The History of James Bishop (Merchant) and the formation of Bishopton, Scotland.

In his great-grandson's will (Asa, b. 1753), Capt. John Bishop is said to have been one of the earliest settlers in Virginia, settling on the south side of the James River, above old Jamestown, and was of old English stock.

Some say that Capt. John came to the US on the ship "Paule", which left the Port of London 6 July 1635. I think it is more likely that the John Bishop who came over on The Paule is the one described in THE BISHOP FAMILY by Bobby G. Adams. Some think Capt. John's wife Elizabeth may have been the sister of George Menefee/ Menifee, but I think that it is more likely that she is the sister of his first wife. See notes below.

There is a great deal of confusion of the John Bishop line shown by Bobby Gerald Adams in THE BISHOP FAMILY, 1982, and the Capt. John Bishop line. Bobby Gerald's book is available from him at P.O. Box 2371; Florence, AL 35630. DNB

      More About John Bishop, Captain:
Fact 1: I had born c. 1612, England, but changed to that shown from info from Michael Bishop (q.v.)
Fact 2: Settled on the south. side of the James River
      Fact 3: Burgess 1644, 1652, & 1653
Fact 4: His estate settled 4/1656
Fact 5: He may have had a son James born after coming to America

      Notes for Elizabeth Booker:
Elizabeth is not proved to be Elizabeth Booker, but Mary Elizabeth Sanders; 2332 Wisteria Street; Baton Rouge, LA 70806 offered a strong argument, based on much research, that she was Elizabeth Booker, sister of Roger Booker and sister of George Menefie's first wife. The Menefie-Booker-etc. connections shown are based on her conclusions, in a letter of 7/25/1997 to Mailande Schrum, who sent me a copy.

      Generation No. 2

      2. Sir Knight William Bishop, the Elder He was the son of 4. Sir Knight James Bishop and 5. Mary. He married 3. Elizabeth Ramsay.

Child of William Bishop and Elizabeth Ramsay is:
1 i. John Bishop, Captain, born Abt. 1590 in Linlithgowshire, Scotland; died Bet. 1655 - 1656 in Charles City Co., VA; married Elizabeth Booker Bef. 1635.

      Generation No. 3

      4. Sir Knight James Bishop He married 5. Mary.
      5. Mary

More About Sir Knight James Bishop:
Fact 1: Generations before Capt. John Bishop from research of Michael Bishop. See notes under Capt. John Bishop.
